It is our goal to build a no kill sanctuary for the animals that need us. There is currently NO other shelter, rescue or adoption program in Price County and we can only help a fraction of the animals we receive requests to assist.
  • Catkins in Spring! Elegant , hanging cylindrical flowers on trees in Des Moines parks. We visited Witmer and Gray's Lake Park to show you catkins, a strand of tiny uni***ual flowers, blooming on different species of trees. When we speak of flowers, in these cases, we're not referring to colorful blooms with petals, as in insect-pollinated blossoms. These flowers are tiny and inconspicuous, but the blooming catkins themselves are elegant, though largely short-lived. Species with Catkins Trees with catkins include those of the Beech family (oaks, chestnuts), the Willow family (willows, aspens, poplars, cottonwoods), the Birch family (birches, alders, hornbeams), the Mulberry family, and the Walnut family (walnuts, hickories). In the Willow family, both male and female flowers occur in the form of catkins, and for most species, a given tree has only one type, either male or female. In the Willow genus (Salix species), many catkins are small and upright, while cottonwoods and aspens have drooping catkins. The remaining families have mostly male catkins, although birches have small, upright female catkins. Most female flowers of these various species take other forms, usually smaller and rounder, developing later in the year into acorns, alder cones, hickory nuts, walnuts, and other fruits.

  • hickory catkins release pollen in Tipp City, Ohio USA Like many wind-pollinated trees, hickory (Carya, various species) is monoecious, producing apetalous male flowers very abundantly in drooping catkins well suited to casting the pollen grains into the wind. Meanwhile the female flowers are much larger and fewer, eventually developing into distinctive nuts. Here, a flowering shellbark hickory (C. laciniosa) branch in Tipp City , Miami County, Ohio, USA, is artificially encouraged to cast off pollen by someone walking softly and carrying a big stick. Speaking of distinctive nuts, musical accompaniment is courtesy of Michael and Dennis, both on electric guitar.

  • hazel catkins Catkins are the male flower of the hazel, when mature they release clouds of yellowpollen which hopefully fertilize the tiny (1 or 2 millimetres) red female flowers, leading to hazel nuts in the autumn. I love to see these flowers in the middle of winter. Hazel is a very useful plant, which sends up rods when you cut it down, can be split and woven to make all sorts of structures from baskets to huts. We have planted 300 or so hazel bushes on our land and get a renewable harvest of poles and firewood from them, and in good years also a crop of nuts.
