  • Jose da Madre de Deus Fuga in d minor for carillon This fugue is taken from a set of four fugues published by the Portugalie Musica series. MS Kastner in the preface dates this first fugue approximately 1770 by the Portuguese composer, Frei Jose da Madre de Deus, of which almost nothing is known. My carillon teacher, David Christensen arranged this for me, which I recorded on the UCR carillon before coming to Portugal. I dreamed of playing this on one of the carillons at the Mafra Palace, but unfortunately the bell tower(s) have been in a state of disrepair the past four years leaving the carillons unplayable. These photos I took at the Mafra Palace are from my first visit. This is truly one of Europe's greatest treasures!

  • Stone Mountain Park Carillon-Mabel Sansing Sharp Carillonneur For over three decades carillonneur, Mabel Sansing Sharp has treated audiences to spectacular performances of the songs "Clare Delune", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "Amazing Grace" and "Georgia" along with many other songs and hymns. A very special thank you to Ms. Mabel for all of the wonderful memories! For those of you not familiar with the Stone Mountain Carillon, the instrument was built by Schulmerich Carillons in Sellersville, PA for the Coco-Cola Pavilion 1964 World's Fair in New York. The 732-bell carillon is located lakeside in the heart of beautiful Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. This amazing bell tower structure provides daily concerts to those young and old for reflection and inspiration. The carillon is the heaviest of all musical instruments and probably one of the most interesting by design.

  • "Cast In Bronze" Playing Bells by Carillon See interview at end of video. Also see: A carillon is a musical instrument composed of at least 23 carillon bells, arranged in chromatic sequence, so tuned as to produce concordant harmony when many bells are sounded together. It is played from a keyboard that allows expression through variation of touch. The keys are struck with the half-closed hand. In addition, the larger bells are connected to foot pedals. Although bells were first made by man during the Bronze Age, it was not until the 15th century that Flemish bell founders began to discover the process of accurately tuning bells. The 17th century was a golden age for the production of excellent carillons in the Low Countries of Europe. The art of making carillon bells almost died out by the 19th century. It is only in the 20th century that carillon bell founding was revived and has surpassed the quality and tuning of 17th century bells. Carillons are usually installed in a tower, either in a partially enclosed bell chamber which helps soften and blend the tones, or else hanging from an exposed bell frame. The keyboard is either in a room directly below the bells or placed in a cabin located in the bellchamber among the bells. A very few instruments have been mounted on trucks or trailers so that they can be moved from place to place. The world's greatest concentration of carillons is still in the Low Countries of Europe (Belgium, The Netherlands, northern France and northwest Germany). The art of ...
  • IMAGE no. 2 Carillon Jon Lehrer Performs the Image no. 2, by Emilien Allard, (1915-1977) on the carillon of Peer, Belgium. The CARILLON is a musical instrument made up of anywhere from 23 to 78 large bells, traditionally hung in a tower, tuned chromatically (like a piano) and played from a klavier such as the one you see here, with the feet and the hands. They are heard outdoors for several blocks and are used as a form of public music in cities, on university campuses, and church grounds. • Luc Rombouts - Entertainer Rag (on KUL Library Carillon) The library of the Catholic University of Leuven, founded in 1425, was located inside the university halls, and was enlarged in 1725 in a baroque style. In 1914, during World War I, Leuven was plundered by German troops, and a large part of the city was set fire to, effectively destroying about half of the city. The library was lost, as well as about 300000 books, and a huge collection of m***cripts. The University Library was rebuilt by the American architect Whitney Warren. The tower houses one of the largest carillons in the world. Warren took particular pride in his design of the reconstructed library at the Catholic University of Leuven, finished in 1928, which carried the controversial inscription 'Furore Teutonico Diruta: Dono Americano Restituta' ("Destroyed by German fury, restored by American generosity") on the facade. The library was largely destroyed by German forces again in 1940. Here you see the 'beiaard' Luc Rombouts playing Scott Joplin's 'Entertainer Rag' on the carillon. The video is made yesterday, 6th of May, 2008.
  • Breana 11yr old pianist - Les Carillons & Strutting About This was Breana's 6th year of piano. For her recital on May 8, 2009, she played two pieces. The first was a classical piece, "Les Carillons" by Johann Philipp Kirnberger (1721-1783). The second was a jazz piece, "Strutting About" by Christopher Norton. This was filmed on a BlackBerry so unfortunately the sound quality is not optimal and quickly gets out of sync with the video.

  • Carillons Return to Russia The Carillon is a traditional Flemish musical instrument that resembles an organ. But instead of pipes it has bells housed in a bell tower. One has to use fists and feet to play the instrument. In the 18th century Peter the First brought five such instruments to Russia from Holland, but over time they were all lost. Belgian carillon player Jo Haazen decided to present two of these noble instruments to the Russian people. Haazen has been playing the Carillon for 50 years and is the director of the Royal Carillon School. He says music is a way of spiritual communication. [Jo Haazen, Professor]: "Let's do something good, kind for Saint Petersburg. I created a Carillon for you. I love Russia very much." Haazen found sponsors to bring two Carillons to Saint Petersburg. And on the 300th anniversary of Saint Petersburg, he played the Carillon for people. [Jo Haazen, Professor]: "This is a pure sound. The characteristics of Carillons are pure bells. All of them are tuned up like a violin or a piano. Moreover the musician has to play as well as he can. The heart, ears, and mind all have to be pure — this is very important." All the compositions are performed by young musicians — pupils of Jo Haazen. And there is Carillon school in one of the Institutes in Saint Petersburg. [Geaneya, Passer-by]: "It's a little bit windy. But anyway we specially came here to listen to the bells. This sound is just wonderful, very skillfully played." [Lidiya Ignatenkova, Passer-by ...
  • CAPRICHO ARABE Carillon Jon Lehrer Performs the Capricho Arabe, originally composed for guitar by Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909) on the carillon of Peer, Belgium. Many many thanks to the wonderful efforts of Eric Vandevoort and his recording staff, who created the best carillon video recording setup I've ever seen. NOW I NEED A FAVOR FROM YOU: At the time of this posting, only 4 of the first 20 results of a youtube search for "carillon" actually feature carillons. I want people to know about this instrument! Please, if you enjoy this video or any other real carillon video you see, rate it, favorite it, comment, and share with your friends!
