  • Cantata 51, Elizabeth Parcells JS Bach, complete hi res version at interview comment from 2005 Elizabeth: I performed Cantata 51 before it was recorded but never where the Chorale and Alleluia were the same tempo and that worked perfectly. Those two tempos are identical. There's no tempo change indicated. The conductor did it that way and it worked. Boy was I glad I had practiced singing scales, quads, and triplets with a metronome in good time. That is what the music demands. The conductor and I were able to deliver that because I'd practiced the techniques and could sing my melismas evenly. When all the notes are created differently the melismas get choppy. The singer has to smooth out the legato and sing the notes evenly in rhythm. That has to be trained. When you get to your professional thing and that's what the conductor wants and what the music demands you want to know that you are technically ready to deliver. If there is a lack of precision it means the singer has neglected their exercises.

  • JS Bach - Choral from Cantata No.147 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) was a German composer and organist whose ecclesiastical and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivaled control of harmonic and motivic organization, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Partitas, the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion, the Magnificat, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue, the English and French Suites, the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, the Cello Suites, more than 200 surviving cantatas, and a similar number of organ works, including the celebrated Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected throughout Europe during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognized as a great composer until a revival of interest and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now regarded as the greatest composer of the Baroque, and as one of the greatest of all time. Gian Lorenzo Bernini (also spelled Gianlorenzo or Giovanni Lorenzo; 7 ...

Coro: "Jauchzet, frohlocket!" Performed by Concentus Musicus Wien & the Arnold Schoenberg Chor Featuring Christine Schafer, soprano Bernarda Fink, alto Werner Gura, tenor Gerald Finley, bass Christian Gerthaher, bass Directed by Nicholas Harnoncourt *Recorded in 2007 **The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachtsoratorium) BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 incorporating music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a now lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach's autograph m***cript. The next performance was not until 17 December 1857 by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin under Eduard Grell. The Christmas Oratorio is a particularly sophisticated example of the parody technique. The author of the text is unknown, although a likely collaborator was Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander).

  • Gioachino Rossini - Cantata in onore del Sommo Pontefice Pio Nono (1847) - "Sacra cima, un di superba" - No. 2. Quartet (Mariella Devia, Paul Austin Kelly, Michele Pertusi & Francesco Piccoli) This brilliant cantata was first performed on January 1, 1847, when Rossini was very much a passive composer, limiting himself to salon pieces, as part of a day of grand festivities honoring the recently elected Pius IX who was widely welcomed in Europe as a reforming pope. Not heard again until it was revived in 1992 to great acclaim, the cantata calls for large performing forces, including four solo singers (STTB), mixed chorus with solo voices, full orchestra with serpentone and a stage band. Rossini, in poor health at the time, had only reluctantly accepted the commission to compose the piece. To facilitate the task, he based five of the movements on pieces from his Neapolitan operas, "Armida" (1817) and "Ricciardo e Zoraide" (1818) and from the Parisian opera "Le siege de Corinthe" (1826). These he modified and joined together with newly-composed recitatives, the whole set to a new libretto by Count Giovanni Marchetti. A spectacular work in its own right, the cantata also provides an illuminating example of Rossini's recompositional practices in adapting previous compositions to new contexts. I've chosen only two pieces to represent the work: the sinfonia and opening chorus; and the penultimate quartet. The large-scale quartet that is set near the end of the work is bound to sound similar as it is one of the victims of constant reuse for Rossini and his works, "Sventurata! or che mi resta" from "Armida" which was used several times, for example, as one of the ...

Did you know that Buxtehude was visited by Handel in 1703 and by Bach in 1705? Bach walked more than 200 miles to meet him and studied with him for several months in 1705 and 1706. Both Handel and Bach wanted to follow Buxtehude at St. Mary's, but neither one wanted to marry his daughter as that was a condition for the position.
  • Béla Bartók - Cantata profana (1/3) 1930 Béla Bartók (1881-1945) Cantata profana (The Nine Enchanted Stags), Sz. 94 Part I (English translation by Robert Shaw) Richard Clement, tenor Nathan Gunn, baritone Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Robert Shaw Cantata Profana (subtitled A kilenc csodaszarvas; English: The Nine Splendid Stags;German: Die Zauberhirsche) Sz. 94, is a choral work for tenor, baritone, choir and orchestra. It was written in 1930 and first performed on BBC Radio on 25 May 1934 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Aylmer Buesst. The Hungarian text is based on a Romanian colinda (a type of Christmas carol) about a father who teaches his nine sons the art of hunting. One day they cross a haunted bridge deep in the forest and are turned into nine stags. Their father arrives and aims his bow at them but when he learns the truth he begs them to return home. The stags reply that this is no longer possible since their antlers would not fit through the door; their new life is in the forest. The critic Paul Griffiths believes Bartók was attracted to the story because it shows "the accordance of dignity and rightness to a natural as opposed to a civilised state: the implicit elevation of the peasant above the townsman..." Bartók's musical style in Cantata Profana was influenced by Bach's Passions, though as the title of the work suggests it is more pagan than Christian. The great technical difficulties the piece presents mean it has had few performances.
