  • Canoe Buying Floating one of Missouri's beautiful streams is a great way to spend a family weekend...and if it's something you like to do often, you'll probably want your own canoe. Here are a few tips on what to look for when you shop: canoes are divided into categories by size: tandem or solo...and by open or covered deck. A solo canoe can carry an adult and child, where a tandem can fit up to two adults and one or two small children or an adult and two children. Covered canoes are used strictly for whitewater. Try before you buy. Borrow different kinds of canoes from friends or rent them from commercial canoe renters. During a test paddle, take a single stroke, then pause to see if the canoe continues to glide easily. Lean outward to see if it threatens to tip, or if it does tip. And be sure to lift each model to get an idea how much weight you can handle. An "all purpose" canoe is good for first-timers. Look for a 16 to 17 foot flat bottom. It's steady and safe with some maneuverability. Fiberglass and kevlar are the most popular materials...they offer good resistance to damage caused by dragging over gravel bars. If you plan to do your paddling in moving water, a keel may give you more stability and helps protect the bottom of your canoe. You can expect to spend between 450 and a thousand dollars for a new, well-designed pleasure canoe. And remember, if you buy a poorly-designed canoe, you may not enjoy the activity, and you'll never know that the canoe design was ...

  • Lipalipa (Dugout canoe) project with Peter Djumbu and Trevor Djarragaygay, Charles Darwin University Peter Djumbu, Trevor Djarragaygay, Judith Dhuru, and Athu at Buwarni in north-central Arnhem Land showing how a dugout canoe (naku or lipalipa) is made. This practice is rare these days in Arnhem Land, aluminium dinghies and outboard motors are so much easier! The only tree that can be used to make a lipalipa is gulu (Bombax sp.) because it is light and easily carved. Djumbu jokes that if a dugout canoe is made from a stringybark tree, you'll find yourself under the sea! Gulu is also the tree of choice for making small carvings for sale to the tourist trade. In the old days, Yolngu did not have metal axes but used stone for wood craft. A stone tool with a sharpened edge would be hafted onto wooden handles using string and the wax from the native bee, the resulting stone axe could be used for chopping down trees to make a lipalipa or a yidaki. The dugout canoe is really of Indonesian origin. Prior to the dugout, Yolngu people used the bark from paperbark trees to make rafts for crossing rivers. These were very impermanent structures but did their job. The bark from stringybark trees could also be fashioned into canoe-like vessels, if you've seen Ten Canoes you'll know what I mean. The dugout offered an advantage in being more structurally sound and more permanent, and could be used in the sea for fishing and hunting turtle, as well as traveling long distances to visit family or to attend ceremony. I recorded this video for Michael Christie at Charles Darwin University for ...

  • Canoe Strokes My family loves to go floating. If you've never tried it, we can get you started. Most important: always wear a life vest...even if you're a strong swimmer. Canoes are unstable, so to be safe, stay low...stay in the middle...and don't move around a lot. Hold the paddle with one hand over the grip, and the other about 6-inches above the blade. Insert the blade near the side of the canoe and dig down until your bottom hand almost touches the water, and sweep back. As the blade leaves the water, flatten it like an airplane wing. Bring the blade forward...keeping it close to the water...and repeat. To move backwards, reverse the motion. To turn the canoe, use a drawstroke. Insert the paddle out in the water with the flat side facing you. Pull back with your lower hand. Reverse that stroke to turn back. Insert the paddle right next to the canoe and push away with the bottom hand. These are basic beginner strokes. The stern paddler needs to know a variety of strokes to put the beginner up front.

  • 1913-2007 Dayton Canoe Club , Dayton Ohio The Dayton Canoe Club is one of just a few active canoe clubhouses left in the United States.During the late 1800's to the 1930's, canoe clubs were a common form of recreation in river front city's like Dayton, Ohio. Most have been destroyed. The Dayton Canoe Club remians much as it was in 1913. Canoeing was an especially popular pastime. In the early days, pillow-lined and victrola-laden canoes offered romantic interludes before the day of the automobile, and canoe competitions attracted large and enthusiastic crowds. At one time, five canoe clubs dotted the banks of the Great Miami and Stillwater Rivers. The last of these was the Dayton Canoe Club, founded in 1913. For many years, the annual Four of July Regatta drew over 30000 spectators along Riverside Drive. Canoeing on the river, sporting events at McKinley Park, dances at Triangle Park, and swimming and boating at Island Park created shared recreational experiences which tightened community bonds and gave residents a rich heritage of lifelong memories. • Earl's Canoe - PREVIEW Purchase: We meet Earl Nyholm, a member of the Ojibwe Nation, as he walks through the woods on Madeleine Island, Wisconsin. He's looking for just the right birch tree to select for the bark which will be used in the making of a traditional Ojibwe canoe. He talks about the respect that the Ojibwe People have for nature and for the spirit of the particular tree used in the making of a canoe following the traditions that had been handed down through the generations. We are told that this spot is a good one for building this canoe as Madeline Island was a sacred place and a center for the Ojibwe Nation in earlier times. We watch the entire process from peeling the bark from the tree to shaping the form of the canoe with heavy rocks and then the elegant stitching together of the canoe's parts. Earl tells us that artists have always depicted birch bark canoes with the distinctive white pattern of the bark on the outside. This is a myth, as they are actually made with the white, outer bark of the tree, on the inside of the canoe. While the task is arduous the work proceeds step by step with the help of other members of the Ojibwe Nation. The excellent camerawork allows us to see in great detail the ingenious process. While it is not as easy as going down to the local sporting goods shop and picking up an aluminum model, there is the sense of satisfaction knowing that the materials and the process are integrated with the natural environment and provide a spiritual ...
  • Waterside Series Canoe Race B at Aldermaston Wharf The Waterside Series of Marathon Races comprises of four races held on the Kennet and Avon C*** in the Spring. They are organised by Newbury Canoe Club. Race B is from Newbury to Aldermaston Wharf and back, the 2009 race took place on 01/Mar/2009. Living right at the c*** I had an excellent view of the action in Aldermaston Wharf, with the canoes arriving, being taken out of the water for portage and returning to start the return leg. Unfortunately I only found out about the race on the day, so I had to improvise a bit for some quick capture. Later on I jogged up the c*** for some further footage of the canoes on their way near Fronds Bridge between Aldermaston Wharf and Woolhampton
