Our correspondent, Zorislav Baydyuk, reports on the Pennsic War -- a blend of the words Pennsylvania and Punic. Here is his report, as narrated by Julia Taboh.

  • CAMPGROUND ST REGIS St Regis, MT Campground St. Regis, the park with the WILDLIFE CARVINGS, is located approx. 2 miles West of St. Regis, MT. (Off I-90 Exit 33). Being surrounded by mountains this campground feels peacefully secluded. Once you arrive and make it past the big ole' carved bear standing by the office door, you'll enter a registration office and be greeted with Western hospitality by Hosts Mitch & Lisa Hollingsworth or one of their friendly staff members. You'll be escorted to one of 75 sites -- that is, if you're ready to break away from the gift shop filled with a variety of western gifts, jewelry and carved critters waiting to be adopted. This RV Park/Campground is beautifully maintained in a wooded setting of shaded sites and green grass. Little surprises pop out as you stroll through the campground. Brightly colored flowers might live in an old dead stump; hanging baskets of florals brighten the office, laundry & game room walkway. Then more surprises can be found hanging on the side of a pole or carved into stumps or on top of them! These are the chain saw critter carvings that have been created by a local artist who realistically sculpts the animals. Each piece becomes a unique work of art. The laundry and restrooms are sparkling clean. Now for a swim? The heated pool is ready. Meanwhile, back at St. Regis: restaurants, gambling, golfing (2 courses), fishing, white water rafting...and by the way, Campground St. Regis has plenty of sites for tenters. • Belle Fourche Campground, Devil's Tower National Monument Devil's Tower, elevation 5117 ft., rises 1267 ft. above the Belle Fourche River. Col. Richard I. Dodge, who commanded a military escort for the USGS in 1875, is credited with naming this steep-sided mass of igneous rock, Devil's Tower. One popular theory for the Tower's origin suggests that it is the result of volcanic activity some 50 million years ago. A mass of molten rock traveled up to the surface of the earth and formed an inverted cone structure. As it cooled, it fractured, creating the Tower's prominent polygonal columns. The site was and is a sacred inspirational location for many Native Americans. According to the National Park Service, over twenty tribes have potential cultural affiliation with Devil's Tower National Monument. They call it Bear Lodge, Bear's Tipi, Ghost Mountain and a dozen other names that best suit their legends. Native Americans use the site for personal rituals, sweatlodge ceremonies, vision quests, and the Sun Dance. President Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed the Tower the nation's first National Monument in 1906. The 8 miles of hiking trails are worth every step. • Roche-A-Cri State Park Campground Roche-A-Cri (means shouting or whooping rock) or crevice in the rock as the French explorers called it, is a 300 foot sandstone bluff near Adams-Friendship, Wisconsin. The park, established in 1948, has viewable Native American petroglyphs and pictographs discovered in 1851, but were written a thousand years ago. Roche-A-Cri is made of Cambrian sandstone about 500000 years old. It is a long narrow flat-topped ridge bordered by shear precipices. The bluff was once an island in the 1800 square mile Glacial Lake Wisconsin. In 1994 a Wisconsin Conservation Corps group finished a 303 step stairway to the top of the bluff. The 605 acre park has a number of soft trails strewn with pine needles that are all linked to the 41 site shower-less campground. One leads to a prairie restoration project, crossing over a foot bridge on Carter Creek, a picturesque trout creek. All 41 campsites are included in this video. Music copyright 2008 by Maury Smith. • Devil's Lake State Park, Northern Lights Campground Sites 104-150 Landscape architect, John Nolen, recommended in 1909 that this site be set aside for a park. Established in 1911, this 9000+ acre park near Baraboo, WI draws over 1.2 million visitors a year. The 360 acre lake is spring fed giving fishermen, paddlers and swimmers a crystal clear water environment. The lake was formed by glacial activity during the last ice age. What was once the Wisconsin River is now a dramatic gorge cut off at the north and south ends by glacial debris. The quartzite rock formations of the park are over 1.5 billion years old and rise over 500 feet above the lake. This "grand canyon of the midwest" takes its name from a mistranslation of the Ho-Chunk "Ta Wa-cun-chuk-dah, meaning "Sacred Lake", "Holy Lake" or "Spirit Lake". According to Ho-Chunk mythology the lake was the birthplace of the Buffalo Clan and is the site of the legendary battle between the water spirits and the thunderbirds. A number of effigy mounds are located throughout the park. This video includes the Northern Lights Campground Sites 104-150. Music copyright 2008 by Maury Smith. • Nelson Dewey State Park Campground Nelson Dewey State Park is a land of incredible vistas overlooking the Mississippi River valley. On the site is the home of Wisconsin's first governor, Nelson Dewey. His 2000 acre plantation was considered the state's first large scale farming operation. The governor's first home was gutted by fire in 1873. The current building was built on the original foundation. Across the road, the State Historical Society operates Stonefield Village and the State Farm Museum. There are a number of effigy mounds constructed by the Hopewell Indian group along the bluff trails and overlooks in the 750 acre park. The trail through the dry lime prairie restoration along the edge of the overlook is very scenic. Tent campers will be impressed with the four walk-in sites overlooking the Mississippi River valley. This is kind of a tribute to real indie film making, like it was in the late 70s and early 80s. It was a lot of fun to make and hopefully you folks will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. Soon we'll be making something of much higher quality with a hi def camera, real actors and a bigger budget, like maybe $100. :) If you like this let us know by leaving a message on our myspace page. /lastknownphotograph
  • Many Glacier Campground, Glacier National Park With over 700 miles of trails, Glacier is a hikers paradise for adventurous visitors seeking wilderness and solitude. This entire area holds great spiritual importance to the Blackfeet, Salish, and Kootenai people. The Blackfeet Indians controlled the vast prairies east of the mountains. The Salish and Kootenai Indians lived and hunted in the western valleys. In 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition came within 50 miles of the area that is now the park. George Bird Grinnell was an early explorer to this part of Montana and spent many years working to get the park established. The area was made a Forest Preserve in 1900. President Taft, in 1910, signed the bill establishing Glacier as the countrys 10th national park. The final section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, over Logan Pass, was completed in 1932 after 11 years of work. The road, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the most scenic roads in North America. Miles of hiking trails follow routes first used by trappers in the early 1800s. Several hotels and chalets, built by the Great Northern Railway in the early 1900s, offer lodging for summer guests to the park. Music by Maury Smith, copyright 2008. • Governor Dodge State Park, Twin Valley Campground Sites 200-293 Governor Dodge State Park is Wisconsin's second largest park with an area of 5270 acres. It is named after Henry Dodge, the first Territorial Governor. The glaciers of the last Ice Age bypassed this area and left intact valleys sculpted out of 450 million year old sandstone. Human occupation of the area dates back over 8000 years. There are two man-made lakes in the park, Cox Hollow and Twin Valley, that are encircled with miles of trails for hiking, biking, skiing, and horseback riding. The Military Ridge State Trail connects to Blue Mounds State Park and continues all the way to Madison. There are 269 family campsites, eight group campsites, 11 for horse campers and six that require a hike in the back country. • Tenting on the old campground From "The Union" by Columbia Masterworks Lyrics: We're tenting tonight on the old camp ground Give us a song to cheer Our weary hearts, a song of home And friends we love so dear. Many are the hearts that are weary tonight, Wishing for the war to cease; Many are the hearts looking for the right To see the dawn of peace. Tenting tonight, tenting tonight, Tenting on the old camp ground. We are tired of war on the old camp ground, Many are dead and gone, Of the brave and true who've left their homes, Others been wounded long. Many are the hearts that are weary tonight, Wishing for the war to cease; Many are the hearts looking for the right To see the dawn of peace. Dying tonight, dying tonight, Dying on the old camp ground.
