Check Mate - Art by Dario Campanile visit: Italian-born Dario Campanile who was advised by Salvador Dali and Georgia deChirico as a young artist in Rome, now lives in Maui Hawaii but is an artist of the world. He was commissioned to paint the snowy mountain peak forming the logo for Paramount Pictures and was selected as one of the artists from around the world to capture the essence of the Dalai Lama and his mission. Campanile recently traveled to India to meet his holiness and create his contribution to the now touring Missing Peace exhibit. A Prairie Icon - South Dakota State's Coughlin Campanile The Coughlin Campanile was completed on the campus of South Dakota State University in 1929. Costing $75000, it was a gift to the University from Charles Coughlin, a graduate from the class of 1909. The Campanile is a chimes tower that rises to 165 feet and covers three octaves while being "played" manually from an organ in the nearby Lincoln Music Hall. The Campanile also appears in SDSU's business logo and on most letterheads. In August 2000, as a part of "Visions for the Future" campaign over 4000 alumni and businesses donated a total of $540000 to have the Campanile restored. This restoration included mortar work and replacement of parts of the limestone base. For many years the Coughlin Campanile was the tallest structure in South Dakota and is the iconic figure for the campus and the city. Its distinctive red lamp at the top is a familiar beacon on a dark prairie night that welcomes travelers from tens of miles away.

The Willoughby Campanile, housed at John Taylors Bellfoundry A ring of eight bells in a portable frame. These bells have travelled all over the country. I first rang on them at the Ringing Roadshow at Keele University in 2001. I think that Taylors' shed is their home when they are not out somewhere.
