Moment of Japan earthquake caught on cameras triggering 10m tsunami Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com North-east Japan has been swamped by a major tsunami - and the entire Pacific region is now on alert. It was caused by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck 130 kilometres off the eastern coast - sending a reported 10-metre wall of water inland, causing widespread devastation. 32 people are confirmed dead - but that number's expected to rise. The wave has also reached Russia's Kuril islands to the north, reportedly around a metre high. In Japan, 200 people have reportedly been washed away, with several others missing in Japan's Sendai city. Tokyo's been all-but shut down - with fires and injuries widely reported there. Millions are without electricity. Norita International Airport is also closed. 20 powerful aftershocks have been recorded since the first quake, which was the strongest ever recorded in Japan - and the 6th biggest-ever. An earthquake has now been felt in Hawaii - measuring 4.5 - with tsunami waves expected within a few horus.

You can try this out in the latest version of Pleco (2.2); search for "Pleco" in iTunes to download our free basic app, open it, tap on the menu button at the bottom right corner of the screen, tap "Add-ons," tap on "Optical Character Recognizer," then tap on the button to download and try the demo. This works best on the iPhone 4, but should work quite well on the 3GS too (as long as it's been upgraded to iOS 4); unfortunately, it won't work on the iPod Touch 4th-gen or the iPhone 3G, as the cameras on those devices lack autofocus and so can't see characters clearly enough to recognize them.

For all your tech nmews: www.technobuffalo.com While one of the biggest complaints about the original iPad was its lack of a front facing camera for video calls, the iPad 2 has solved this issue. Sort of. When Steve Jobs took the stage and introduced the iPad 2, we were all pretty certain we would be seeing cameras this time around, and he did not let us down. Indeed there is a rear facing camera for video recording & still photos, as well as a front facing one you can use for FaceTime amongst other things. The problem is that Apple appears to have used the same sub-par ones they used in the iPod Touch 4. The rear facing lens is reportedly less than a megapixel, but no one is certain as Apple won't officially say. All the company will tell us is that it shoots 720p HD video, but no word on what the quality is for still photos. The front facing camera is just a simple VGA job that shoots video, but it is about as basic a camera as you can get. Our own Jon Rettinger put the two cameras and their built-in mic through some simple tests, and as you can see for yourself in the video above, the results are less than stellar. They are certainly of passable quality, but not anything you would want to shoot serious material with. You can definitely FaceTime with family members, take a quick video at a party or the like, but it isn't going to be anything you want to keep for posterity. What do you think? Were ...

octopus steals my video camera and swims off with it (while it's Recording) while trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashed towards me and rips my shiny new camera from out of my hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording! he swam away very quickly like a naughty shoplifter. after a 5 minute chase, I placed my speargun underneath him and he quickly and curiously grabbed hold of the gun as well, giving me enough time to reach in and grab the camera from out of his mouth.
