  • A. Cabezon-Differencias sobr el canto Antonio de Cabezón (c. 1510 -- 26 March 1566) was a Spanish Renaissance composer and organist. Blind from childhood, he quickly rose to prominence as performer and was eventually employed by the royal family. He was among the most important composers of his time and the first major Iberian keyboard composer. Cabezón was born in Castrillo Matajudíos, a municipality near Burgos, in the north of Spain. Nothing is known about his formative years. He became blind in early childhood, and he may have been educated at the Palencia Cathedral by the organist there, García de Baeza. At the time, the country was slowly entering its Golden Age. On 14 March 1516 Charles V was proclaimed King of Castile and of Aragon jointly with his mother, the first time the crowns of Castile and Aragon were united under the same king. After the death of his paternal grandfather, Maximilian, in 1519, Charles also inherited the Habsburg lands in Austria, and later went on to become Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and one of the most powerful monarchs in the world. In 1525 Charles married Isabella of Portugal, further strengthening his position in Spain. It was Isabella who employed Cabezón into her service in 1526. His duties included playing the clavichord and the organ, and he also assumed the position of organist at the chapel Isabella organized soon after her wedding. The composer remained with the royal family for the rest of his life. Through the court, he met such important composers as ...

  • Antonio de Cabezón: Pavana con su glosa Guy Bovet plays the Salinas Organ, Salamanca The most ancient of the three organs in the cathedral of Salamanca bears the name of Francisco Salinas, an influential musician in the times of Cabezón and the building date of the organ around 1540. This organ looks like a confessional, much bigger than a portative, but it was carried around on processions during the centuries. Guy Bovet plays a Pavane with added glosa, a typical composition style of XVI. century Spain. First a simple dance piece, the pavane, ist given, followed by the glosa, a musical commentary on the theme. Guy Bovet, Organ Valois CD 4650 Picture: ja-jp.colourlovers.com
Esperamos k os guste You'll take my life but I'll take yours too You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through So when you're waiting for the next attack You'd better stand there's no turning back. The bugle sounds and the charge begins But on this battlefield no one wins The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath As I plunge on into certain death. The horse he sweats with fear we break to run The mighty roar of the Russian guns And as we race towards the human wall The screams of pain as my comrades fall We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground And the Russians fire another round We get so near yet so far away We won't live to fight another day. We get so close near enough to fight When a Russian gets me in his sights He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow A burst of rounds take my horse below. And as I lay there gazing at the sky My body's numb and my throat is dry And as I lay forgotten and alone Without a tear I draw my parting groan

  • A. DE CABEZON Diferencias sobre la Gallarda Milanesa - Simone Stella Simone Stella plays Diferencias sobre la Gallarda Milanesa by Antonio De Cabezon (1510 - 1566) Spanish composer and organist, blind from infancy, he was taught music first by local organists, then by the cathedral organist in Valencia. In 1526 he was appointed organist to Queen Isabella. After her death in 1539 he worked for her children, especially Prince Philip, who later became King Philip II and was from 1548 Cabezón's sole employer. He traveled widely in Europe (including England) with the king in the years 1548-56 but settled in Madrid when it became the home of the Spanish royal court, remaining there until his death. His numerous compositions for organ and stringed keyboard instruments include glosas (intabulations of polyphonic works by other composers, usually not Spanish, reconceived as keyboard pieces), diferencias (variation sets, in which he was a pioneer, most based on melodies from Spanish cancioneros and on dances), entirely original tientos, and various liturgical pieces such as hymns. Some works were included in Luis Venegas de Henestrosa's Libro de cifira nueva (1557); most were first printed by his son Hernando de Cabezón in Obras de nuisicapara tecla, arpa y vihuela de Antonio de Cabezón (1578). The latter book also includes a general presentation of the composer's teachings on keyboard playing; the discussion of fingering is particularly notable for the progressiveness of the ideas set forth. Only one vocal work, a piece for five voices, is known.

  • Cabezon - Diferencias Sobre el Canto Llano del Caballero. Played on clavichord. Antonio de Cabezón (1510-1566), Spanish composer and organist, wrote several variation cycles based on Spanish tunes of the day. His travels took him to England, Holland, Germany, Luxembourg and Italy where he undoubtedly was exposed to and met eminent masters of his time. His compositional methods are evident in the works of Byrd and Sweelinck. The diferencias on this video culminate with variation five where one finds the cantus in the tenor. The music is appropriate for clavichord, organ or harpsichord. The clavichord in the video was built in 2004 by Gary Blaise, San Francisco, after a fretted instrument by Hubert. • Bob Swift Plays Cabezon This is an excerpt from a 1992 concert featuring my playing of "Differencias sobre la Gallarda Milanesa" (Variations on the Milanese Galliard) by Spanish composer Antonio de Cabezon. Born at Castrillo de Matajudios (Burgos) in 1510, blind from infancy, Antonio died in Madrid in 1566 as organist and cembalist to King Philip II of Spain. Cabezon was regarded as one of the foremost and most illustrious organists of his time. In this piece is recognized the vigorous and firm style of Cabezon. I included it on this 1992 concert to demonstrate the mixtures and mutations of the Great division of pipes, contrasting with the Positif and Swell reeds. ---- [My apologies to all my Spanish organist friends for the inevitable flaws of this performance. Ha!]
