  • Béla Bartók - String Quartet No. 6, III-IV String Quartet No. 6 in D major, Sz. 114, BB 119 (1939) I. Mesto -- Vivace II. Mesto -- Marcia III. Mesto -- Burletta. Moderato IV. Mesto Novák Quartet Bartók's last completed quartet exemplifies the composer's continuing search for new forms, even as he sought to distill and clarify his mode of expression. The form he devised for the String Quartet No. 6 is ingenious: each movement is preceded by an introductory section marked "Mesto" ("sadly"), with increasing complexity at each appearance. The "mesto" theme functions both as a motto and as the source of much of the quartet's thematic substance. In the fourth movement, rather than giving way to a lively finale (the original plan as indicated by Bartók's sketches), the motto continues on to become the conclusion itself. The sad introductory theme is played first by solo viola, whose last notes are the germ for a unison statement by all four instruments in peremptory three-note phrases that will return later, as a sort of subsidiary motto. The first theme is in quick triplets that are chromatically sinuous. The second theme is a folk-like melody, with a prominent "Scotch snap" rhythm. The first theme dominates the development, which is fairly strenuous and darker in mood. After a brief appearance of the second theme, the movement ends simply with a reprise of the first theme, now detached and musing. The "mesto" introduction to the second movement is in two-part counterpoint, the cello stating the melody accompanied by ...

  • Bartók String Quartet No. 6 Mesto - Molto tranquillo .wmv The String Quartet No. 6 by Béla Bartók was written from August to November, 1939 in Budapest. The work is in four movements: Mesto - Vivace Mesto - Marcia Mesto - Burletta Mesto - Molto tranquillo Each movement opens with a slow melody marked mesto (sadly). This material is employed for only a relatively short introduction in the first movement, but is longer in the second and longer again in the third. In the fourth movement, the mesto material, with reminiscences of the first movement material, takes up the entire movement. It can be seen from Bartók's sketches that he originally intended ending with a lively dance-like finale; however, upon learning of the death of his mother, he re-wrote the last movement as a deeply sad elegy. This was the last piece that Bartók wrote in his native Hungary, and had things turned out differently it may have been his last of all, as he found it hard to compose in the United States, where he had fled to escape World War II. However, a commission from Serge Koussevitzky, led to him writing his Concerto for Orchestra, and he wrote a small number of other pieces after that, as well as making a few sketches for a seventh, never completed, string quartet. The work is dedicated to the Kolisch Quartet, and it was they that gave its premiere in New York City on 20 January 1941. The work was first published in the same year by Boosey & Hawkes

  • Gioachino Rossini - La scala di seta - Ouverture Two full comic operas notwithstanding, the beginning of Rossini's career is best represented by a continuous succession of five one act operas or farsas, as Rossini himself described them: "La cambiale di matrimonio", "L'inganno felice", "La scala di seta", "L'occasione fa il ladro" (only this piece is designated by the composer as a "burletta" but the nature of the work gives us an opportunity to consider it an important part of this quintet of operas) and "Il signor Bruschino". All these works are also closely connected by the fact that they follow the same basic form with just a few variations. Structurally, all the first five operas share several obligatory elements: a lively overture; an introduction, usually limited to just three singers; arias for the main quartet of bass, baritone (or another bass), soprano and tenor (though one of these can be skipped); a central ensemble which feels almost as a first act finale, if the opera was just an hour longer (a terzet (in three operas), quartet or ***tet); duets for two basses, tenor and soprano or soprano and bass; a long finale during which the plot reaches its' climax but all things invariably end happily. Usually the pieces are composed of just eight numbers, amounting to about an hour of music, only in "L'occasione" do we get eleven (mainly, because of two arias for the soprano). Moreover, all operas, in spite of being designated as "farsas" which, arguably, they are to a great extent, feature a very strong ...
