- First Friday - Self-Government or Czarist Bureaucracy - Dr. Larry P. Arnn The Declaration of Independence was a revolutionary document, but also a humble one. American government, it proclaimed, would be at all times subservient to "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God." Today, in higher education and in politics, those laws are held not to exist. As a direct result, our government rules according to its unchecked will, and we are seeing the reduction of politics to force. The key to reversing this trend--thus to reviving liberty--is a return to our ancient faith. Larry P. Arnn is the twelfth president of Hillsdale College. He received his BA from Arkansas State University, and his MA and Ph.D. in government from the Claremont Graduate School. He also studied at the London School of Economics and at Worcester College, Oxford University, where he was director of research for Sir Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill. From 1985-2000, Dr. Arnn was president of the Claremont Institute. He is the author of Liberty and Learning: The Evolution of American Education. The First Principles on First Fridays monthly lecture series was launched in 2008 by the Hillsdale College Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, DC

- Three Years of Immigration Fraud: The Case Study of Manoj Kargudri WASHINGTON (November 2009) The Center for Immigration Studies is releasing the third video in its series Border Basics by Janice Kephart, "Three Years of Fraud in the US: The Case of Manoj Kargudri." Following closely on the heels of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitanos announcement that she is looking forward to working with Congress on comprehensive immigration reform, Janice Kephart explores how the agency that would be responsible for carrying out an amnesty of 12 million illegal aliens still cannot ferret out fraud in a single simple employment petition even eight years after 9/11. Kephart examines the case of Manoj Kargudri, an Indian national who exploited simple loopholes in our immigration system five times over three years to enter and remain in the United States. Kargudri was finally stopped at the San Antonio airport on August 28, 2008, by the Transportation Security Administration. He was not stopped because of his immigration violations, but rather because he had a one-way ticket to Washington and in his carry-on luggage were box cutters and a homemade battery strapped to his MP3 player. Luckily, he turned out not to be a terrorist, but the fraud in the immigration system allowed Kargudri to obtain a visa and enter and stay in the United States for three years before he was finally arrested and deported. Kephart concludes that while Kargudris employment fraud is largely solvable, the agency responsible for adjudicating immigration ...

- Alex Takes Calls on Tax Payers Paying $431 Billion a Year for IRS, CPA Bureaucracy! 1/3 IRS, CPA bureaucracy cost tax payers $431 billion a year Tax compliance employs more workers than Wal-Mart, UPS, McDonald's, IBM and Citigroup combined Arthur B. Laffer WSJ April 18, 2011 There is a lot more to taxes than simply paying the bill. Taxpayers must spend significantly more than $1 in order to provide $1 of income-tax revenue to the federal government. To start with, individuals and businesses must pay the government the $1 in revenue plus the costs of their own time spent filing and complying with the tax code; plus the tax collection costs of the IRS; plus the tax compliance outlays that individuals and businesses pay to help them file their taxes. In a study published last week by the Laffer Center, my colleagues Wayne Winegarden, John Childs and I estimate that these costs alone are a staggering $431 billion annually. This is a cost markup of 30 cents on every dollar paid in taxes. And this is not even a complete accounting of the costs of tax complexity. Like taxes themselves, tax-compliance costs change people's behavior. Taxpayers, whether individuals or businesses, respond to taxes and tax-compliance costs by changing the composition of their income, the location of their income, the timing of their income, and the volume of their income. So long as the cost of changing one's income is lower than the taxes saved, the taxpayer will engage in these types of tax-avoidance activities. www.prisonplanet.tv ...
- Col Snider: US Military a Bureaucracy Not a Profession 1 Army Retired Colonel and Professor Don Snider Reveals US Military is NOT a Profession of Conscience but a Bureaucracy...and the fault for this is the Colonels and Generals (Admirals) in the armed forces for creating a climate where lemming subordinates must blindly obey their BS instead of their consciences and the external facts of reality which over time results in the organization not having expertise to do vital tasks well because professional skills and knowledge which comes from the rank & file through experimentation and study is not valued. Snider is wrong in one regard implying that we must wait for the senior brass to make it safe or that one has to be on paid active duty to practice your profession; we must be professional reformers now who create and advocate military excellence--- and damn how the bureaucrats will resent and resist it; the truth cannot be killed; ideas are bullet and career back-stab-proof!

- Bureaucracy for the Apple II (From the Infocom Home Page) Once upon a time, a man moved from one apartment in London to another. He dutifully notified everyone of his new address, including his bank; he went to the bank and filled out a change of address form himself. The man was very happy in his new apartment. Then, one day, the man tried to use his credit card but couldn't. He discovered that his bank had invalidated his credit card. Apparently, the bank had sent a new card to his old address. For weeks, this man tried to get the bank to acknowledge his change of address form. He talked to many blank officials, and filled out new forms, and tried to get a new credit card issued, but nothing worked. The man had no credit, and the bank behaved like, well, a bank. It's a sad story, one that gets replayed every day for millions of people worldwide. Of course, sometimes it's not a bank at fault: sometimes it's the postal service, or an insurance company, or the telephone company, or an airline, or the Government. But all of us, at one time or another, feel persecuted by a bureaucracy. You begin in your new house. As per the letter in your package, you will fly to Paris just as soon as you get some money to take you to the airport. That money should be in today's mail, so you should be off soon... unless, of course, there's been some problem with the mail. Oh by the way: The man in our story about the bank was Douglas Adams, the principal author of this game. The bank did finally send him a letter ...

- Presidential Politicization of the Bureaucracy Sponsored by the USC SPPD Bedrosian Center Presented by: David E. Lewis Abstract: This paper explains why American presidents politicize some agencies and not others. It focuses on politicization motivated by a presidential desire to change agency policies, particularly in areas central to the presidents agenda, but constrained by the need to not excessively damage agency competence. It tests these expectations with original data from a survey of federal executives at the end of the George W. Bush Administration. The paper finds that presidents are more likely to politicize agencies that have different policy views from those of the president. They are less likely to politicize agencies whose tasks are complex or technical. Presidents are also more likely to politicize agencies central to implementing the presidents agenda. The paper concludes that extent of politicization varies across the government but varies in predictable ways based upon the incentives of presidents.
- Is Bureaucracy Stifling the Local Food Movement? Complete video at: fora.tv Author and farmer Joel Salatin argues that the bureaucracy of current food safety regulations effectively favor large-scale agribusiness at the expense of innovative small farms and artisan food producers. ----- American farmer Joel Salatin, the star of the documentary Food Inc, has become a "pin up boy" for the growing food "re-localization" movement. On a recent visit to Canberra, he gives his take on food politics after a lifetime of experience in natural and profitable farming. Salatin came to prominence with his ideas about creating abundance on a family farm. His methods include learning how to mimic nature and arrange the facets of farm life so they don't operate as independent operations, but rather a system of "intertwined cycles." Disregarding conventional wisdom, the Salatins planted trees, built huge compost piles, dug ponds, moved cows daily with portable electric fencing, and utilized portable sheltering systems to produce all their animals on perennial prairie polycultures. Salatin believes we're now living through an age of a "food inquisition", not unlike the religious inquisition of 500 years ago, where the powers behind industrialized agriculture and food production are putting heretical farmers like him "on the rack." In this talk, organized by Milkwood Permaculture in association with Slow Food Canberra, Salatin lays out twelve false assumptions peddled by the "inquisitors," which sustainable farming methods counter ...

- Bureaucracy & the Idiot All institutions within all societies, whether capitalist, socialist or mixed, create bureaucracies to centralize power and wield power more efficiently. In seeking to rationalize and conform to reason, bureaucracies destroy reason, freedom and democracy, according to Max Weber, William James & C. Wright Mills. In forcing the individual to adapt to the demands of Post Modernity, the individual is divided or alienated from himself. People are disengaged from allegiances; neither radical or reactionary. They are inactionary. Bureaucracies produce mass apathy or what the psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich called a mass malaise. If we apply the Greeks definition of the idiot as an altogether private man, then we must conclude many citizens of many societies are indeed idiots.
