2 girls undermine entire US border strategy in under 18 seconds Since the mid-1990s, the US has built fencing at various points along the southern border in an attempt to deter would-be immigrants from Mexico. Building the fence isn't cheap. On average, each mile of border fence costs US taxpayers about $4 million to build and will cost another $6.5 billion over the next 20 years to repair and maintain. Are we getting our money's worth? Is the border fence an effective deterrent? To find out, I asked two young women—both only about 5'5"—to see if they could climb the wall. Check it out... If we're really serious about reducing rates of undocumented immigration, we could make more effective use of our tax dollars. Those of you who have seen my documentary, The Other Side of Immigration, might remember this statement from the end of the film "Why spend money on a border fence when we could invest in highways, factories, and greenhouses. How many greenhouses could we build for the cost of that wall? If we invest in Mexico, people won't want to leave." What do you think? Gaming the Border: a Report from Cochise County, Arizona WASHINGTON (August 10, 2010) -- Federal officials routinely assure the public that they are gaining control over the Arizona border. Despite these assurances, "Gaming the Border: a Report from Cochise County, Arizona," shows why the border there remains porous, as illegal immigrants avoid the Border Patrol and walk around checkpoints on highways north of the border. The video opens at the Cochise County ranch of John Ladd, whose family homesteaded the land in 1896. Ladd describes repeated sightings of illegal immigrants from his kitchen window. The report shows video of illegal immigrants running across his property to rendezvous with smugglers driving on nearby Highway 92. The video also includes multiple scenes recorded by cameras hidden alongside trails through the 14000-acre ranch. It shows not only dozens of illegal immigrants hiking northward, but also a group of three drug smugglers carrying bundles wrapped in burlap. That is the method smugglers commonly use to move marijuana to points where they rendezvous with vehicles that carry the load northward. The illegal activity continues despite the fence that marks the border at the southern edge of the Ladd ranch. The report makes the point that the fence isn't much of an obstacle, especially when the Border Patrol is not around. Uncontacted tribe filmed on Brazil-Peru border - 30 May 08 Paul Allen reports on one of the world's last remaining uncontacted tribes. Brazil's government has released pictures of a previously unseen community of people living in the Amazonian rainforest. It is believed they have never had previous contact with the outside world. They were located on the border between Brazil and Peru. The footage was taken from the air by Funai, a Brazilian government foundation, dedicated to the protection of indigenous tribes. Funai has a policy to not contact tribes similar to this one, and instead try to prevent invasions of their land so they remain autonomous. But the agency warns the tribe, and others like it believed to be living in the Amazon, that they are at risk from illegal logging.

Tension over India-China border - 15 Sep 09 India and China have played down reports of renewed tension between them over a long-running border dispute. But the two Asian countries have been arguing about the demarcation of their 4000km-long border for several decades. There is now renewed tension on the border issue over which the two countries fought a brief war in 1962. Parts of the frontier are still in dispute, including a portion of Kashmir and the eastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian military recently accused China of launching incursions and have stepped up its presence in Kashmir. However, in an interview with Al Jazeera's Hamish Macdonald, P Chidambaram, India's interior minister, did not rule out error. "It is a disputed border. There could be navigational errors. What we think are violations have taken place and these are resolved by talking to each other," he said. "But please remember that the India-China border is not the same as the LoC between India and Pakistan, where infiltration takes place, violence takes place." In the latest development, the government of Arunachal Pradesh urged New Delhi on Tuesday to act tough on Chinese claims over the state. "Chinese claims over Arunachal Pradesh are simply baseless and not correct.
