Space Soundtrack: Scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey A college assignment, a scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey that my professor had on the lab computer. I wrote the music and programmed all the synths, etc. I later tried it with the original film and discovered that this clip was somehow slowed down, and the scene is actually faster. I think this would have been 2006 or 2007
Polyphonic and flowing improvisation This Improvisation starts with a simple Arpeggio. But it shifts in a hurry into a Polyphonic Texture. Somewhat, polyphony shift into a flowing texture. At the end, something echoing Jazz: a chord in which there's a sort of Tonality Overlapping (Major mode with the Natural Third, shifting into a Bi tonal path). I hope you may enjoy!

Béla Bartók - Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs for piano, Sz. 74, BB 83 (Op. 20) (1920) I. Molto moderato II. Molto capriccioso III. Lento rubato IV-V. Allegretto scherzando -- Allegro molto VI. Allegro moderato, molto capriccioso VII. Sostenuto rubato VIII. Allegro Claude Helffer, piano The Eight Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs for piano marked a significant moment in Bartók's oeuvre, the point at which he began to treat folk tunes as malleable musical material. Instead of taking a simple folk tune and harmonizing it, Bartók was now manipulating the folk tunes, transforming and shaping them to fit his compositional needs while still retaining their original spirit. Folk music is at the heart of nearly all of Bartók's compositions, beginning with his works at the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. By this point, Bartók had spent several years collecting folk tunes from all over Eastern Europe. For Bartók, folk music served as raw material for composing art music, and indeed the musical idioms of Hungarian, Romanian, and Slovakian folk music became a fundamental part of Bartók's compositional style. These Improvisations show Bartók realizing, perhaps for the first time, the true fecundity of the folk music he had come to know so well. The first Improvisation is a very simple setting of the original melody, with very little variation of the tune, which is repeated three times, followed by a coda. The melody is modal, derived from the C Dorian mode. It is ...

Bridge - Piano Sonata; I (Part 2/2) First movement from the Piano Sonata (1921-24) According to Andrew Burn "As a pacifist of deep conviction Bridge was scarred by the misery caused by World War I. It is known that he was so distressed by the news from the battlefields that he would wander the streets by himself at night, mulling over the carnage. Furthermore his response to the war also seems to have triggered a stylistic crisis in his music, and a need to develop a more radical harmonic voice to express himself. The first major manifestation of this new style was his most important solo work for piano, the Sonata... The Piano Sonata was composed between Easter 1921 and May 1924, and since Harold Samuel, the pianist Bridge initially had in mind to give the première, found it bewildering, its first performance was played by Myra Hess on 15 October 1925 at the Wigmore Hall. Bridge dedicated the sonata to the memory of his composer friend, Ernest Bristow Farrar, who had been killed in action in 1918 aged 33. It was the first of Bridge's works to receive a mauling by the critical fraternity: for instance The Daily Telegraph reviewer felt it was 'inclined to dourness throughout', whilst in The Morning Post it was dismissed as a 'disappointment'. The characteristics of Bridge's late style are foreshadowed in the sonata. There is dissonance arising from bi-tonal and intensely chromatic harmony; the phrase structure differs from the smoothness of his earlier music, reflecting the more complex harmony, with ...

Saudades do Brasil Selections from Saudades do Brasil (1920-21) by Darius Milhaud, performed on marimbas by Kyle Davison and Ian Disjardin. IV: Copacabana II: Botafogo VII: Corcovado VI: Gavea In 1917, Milhaud accompanied the French poet Paul Claudel to Brazil for two years, where Claudel served as an ambassador. The beautiful setting, vibrant culture, and cheerful music had a profound effect on Milhaud, whose experiences crystallized in the two volume collection for piano, Saudades do Brasil, which was published in 1920-21. In Portuguese, a saudade is a fond yet bittersweet remembrance. The twelve movements of Saudades ¬ named after districts in Rio de Janeiro pay respect to the style and flavor of Brazilian choro while adding the element of bitonality, the simultaneous use of two key signatures. This piece was simple to adapt for marimbas; one performer plays the piano right hand and the other plays the left.
BITONAL Goldberg Variations - Aria Sometimes, when I'm bored, I practice pieces this way, to see how well I understand the tonality of the different voices. This is me playing the Aria from JS Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988. The right hand is in the correct key of G, but I transposed the left hand to G-flat. I then play it a second time correctly, with both hands in G. If you can't stand the atonal version -- and I wouldn't blame you at all for that -- the proper version starts at about 2:12.
(3/7) Mauffray conducts Bartok "Bluebeard's Castle" Bartok Bela: A Kékszakállú Herceg Vára This third video excerpt begins when Judith opens the 2nd door, and a beam of orange colored light is cast upon the floor next to the red light from the first door. A martial fanfare is heralded on the Trumpet which is soon echoed by the French Horn. Throughout this passage, the rhythmic meter is constantly changing. Bluebeard asks what she sees (Hungarian "mit latsz?"). Judith describes the cruel weapons in his armory. When she notices that there is blood on the weapons, Bluebeard again asks if she is afraid ("felsz-e?"). This time, the "blood motive" of a minor 2nd is played on the muted French Horns and Trumpets after a short roll on the Snare Drum [0:29]. Judith once more boldly asks for keys to all the other locked doors. She alternates her assertive demands by tenderly pointing out how the light is beginning to radiate his castle. Notice the beautiful rubato of the folk-like melodies here played by English Horn [1:06], Clarinet, and then the warmth of the Violins. This is perhaps the most tender loving moment of the opera and not yet effected by angst. Bluebeard's reply to her is introduced by a repeated c# minor chord played by the Harp [2:22]. Bartok creates a unique new color (perhaps red and orange?) by adding a bi-tonal element with the melody played on the French Horn in a-minor. He tells Judith that she is making his castle walls tremble with rapture. He says that he will give her only three more keys. She may look, but ...
