The BirthPlace at Santa Monica-UCLA Med Ctr & Orthopaedic The BirthPlace is a comprehensive maternity center that includes, among its amenities, a family dining room, two large waiting areas, a play area for children and dedicated lactation spaces. In addition to featuring all of the latest technology, labor/delivery/recovery rooms were designed to recreate the feel of the home environment; these rooms feature flat-screen televisions, wireless capabilities and chairs that can be converted into sleepers for overnight guests. All of the nurses at the facility take extra training to become breastfeeding specialists, and lactation educators are there seven days a week to visit and assist the new parents. "Research has shown that getting the family more involved not only enhances the experience but improves outcomes," says Lynn Sullivan, community programs manager for The BirthPlace. It was here that their seven children were born, the two surviving Maria Anna in 1751 and Wolfgang Amadeus in 1756. The family lived in these very modest quarters until 1773, and during their tour to Paris and London from 1763 to 1766, we learn much of their journey from letters Leopold Mozart wrote to his landlord. The apartment is now a museum preserving family portraits and instruments belonging to Mozart. The former include the unfinished portrait of Mozart painted by his brother-in-law Joseph Lange in 1789, with paintings of Mozart as a child. The instruments include Mozart's Anton Walter fortepiano, bought and used in Vienna, his clavichord, and a violin from his childhood, with a later concert instrument. In 1773 the family moved to the present No. 8 Makartplatz, the so-called Tanzmeisterhaus (Dancing Master House). Farmers harvest blueberries in New Jersey Pinelands, birthplace of the cultivated highbush blueberry New Jersey is the second-largest producer of blueberries in the country, after Michigan, but it holds a much more notable title as the birthplace of the cultivated highbush blueberry. The commercial blueberry was first cultivated in the New Jersey Pinelands by Elizabeth Coleman White, the daughter of a local cranberry farmer, and agricultural scientist Frederick Coville. Whites farm, known as Whitesbog Village, in Pemberton Township, is still farmed by the same family as JJ White, Inc. This year, owner Joe Darlington has revived the farms blueberry business under Elizabeth Whites original Tru-Blu label. Like the Pinelands cranberry industry, blueberry farming goes back generations. One of the largest blueberry farms in state, Atlantic Blueberry Company, in Hammonton, is run by the sons of the five Galletta brothers who founded it in 1935. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)
