From 1996-1999, Joshua taught ecological economics at the School for Field Studies, Centre for Rainforest Studies (CRS), serving as program director for his final year. While at CRS, he conducted field research in collaboration with community stakeholders and students applying ecological economics to local environmental problems. Specific projects focused on the valuation of ecosystem services from riparian forests for local dairy farmers, regional communities and international society; cultural values and ethnoecology; and local, regional and global values of various approaches to forestry.
  • MoDynamics (mograph)- Mock Enzyme Biophysics A biophysical interpretation of a MoDynamics simulation set up to display competitive inhibition that has properties tending towards suicide inhibition. I'll try to describe this without referring to reaction rates, etc. too much. The results of this little experiment are more subtle than I had expected which is good because its a bit more realistic. I knew the system would be crowded, but I thought it would still be sparse enough to create a realistic scene to demonstrate competitive inhibition for a stochastic simulation with a simple set of forces governing it. Here is my interpretation of the results: t=0sec We start with 3 "enzyme" cubes (symmetric) with a binding site on each side, and a total of 18 binding sites. We start with 18 "ligand substrates". t=0--33sec Method: A combination of Cinema 4D's turbulence field (a 3D noise force) and a random effector (for all intents and purposes, also acts like a force) set to noise allow the "molecules" to explore a volume based on these forces applied to their mass. An overall "gravity" force field with inverse square falloff is used to artificially and cheaply attempt to mimic binding forces, both long rang electrostatics and short range van Der Waals, hydrophobic, etc. There is no attempt to mimic a true molecular dynamics simulation, but to set up a generic system of forces to illustrate a principle. t=0--33sec Result: An average of 4-5 blue substrates remain bound to one of the 18 sites at any given time.   • A Molecular Flow Sensor Which Induces Blood Clotting The movie shows how a peptide chain (in white) connected to a larger protein (via atoms depicted in gold) changes from a disordered loop state to a hairpin shape in response to increase of blood flow, like from a cut. Areas of the peptide chain extend and rotate (highlighted in purple) to form the hairpin, with hydrogen bonds (in green) completing the transition.   • Wesleyan University Professor David Beveridge David Beveridge, the Joshua Boger University Professor of the Sciences and Mathematics., professor of chemistry, was honored at Wesleyan University's 11th Annual Molecular Biophysics and Biological Chemistry Retreat Sept. 23. Beveridge is a fellow of the Biophysical Society, a National Institutes of Health Merit award winner, and a leader in the area of computational biology and molecular dynamics. He studies how the structure, dynamic and salvation of nucleic acids and proteins influence binding and recognition. Professor Beveridge speaks briefly about his Wesleyan career in this video.

  • Big Sis Caught Lying To American People Homeland Security head Janet Napolitano, now forever known as Big Sis -- a reference to George Orwell's 1984 -- has been caught telling some big lies in an attempt to quell an enormous public backlash against the full body scanning technology and invasive pat-down procedures that have been implemented by the TSA in airports nationwide. In a blatant propaganda piece published by USA Today, Napolitano describes the scanning machines as safe and the pat-downs as "discreet", in the face of a flood of complaints from scientists, pilots, flight attendants, privacy groups, parents, Muslim groups and everyday passengers, all rebelling against over the top security. "AIT machines are safe, efficient, and protect passenger privacy." Napolitano writes in an article in which every single claim she makes can be easily disproved and revealed to be outright lies. Lie: The scanners are safe "They have been independently evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, who have all affirmed their safety." Napolitano claims, expecting the public to simply swallow the claim that NIST and the FDA are somehow "independent" of the federal government. As for Johns Hopkins University declaring the scanners safe, tell it to Dr Michael Love, who runs an X-ray lab at the department of biophysics and biophysical chemistry at the Johns Hopkins school of medicine.   • Dr. Alan Burton Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Laureate 2010b Born in London, England, Dr. Alan Burton began his career as a high school physics teacher before immigrating to Canada at the age of 23 and becoming a graduate student in physics at the University of Toronto. Considered a founding father of modern biophysics and a pioneer in interdisciplinary health research, Dr. Burton was a brilliant scientist and a superb raconteur who had a profound and lasting effect on those he encountered. One of the first physicists to become a biophysicist at a time when biophysics was not in vogue, Dr. Burton is perhaps appreciated most for his uncanny ability to crystallize physical concepts in medicine and make learning relevant, exciting and most of all, fun. Much of his teaching occurred at Coffee Time twice a day; he encouraged his students to keep a notebook of Nobel Prizes Pending; and his books included intriguing poems such as Ode to a red cell. Dr. Burtons Ph.D. work, including the heating of electrolytes by microwaves (then of great medical interest), marked his entry into the world of biology.
