  • More Sarah Palin lies, scandals, and corruption from Alaska Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business. The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife. Palin, who earns $125000 a year, claimed and received $16951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an ***ysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post. The governor's daughters and husband charged the state $43490 to travel, and many of the trips were between their house in Wasilla and Juneau, the capital city 600 miles away, the documents show. In separate filings, the state was billed about $25000 for Palin's daughters' expenses and $19000 for her husband's. Flights topped the list for the most expensive items, and the daughter whose bill was the highest was Piper, 7, whose flights cost nearly $11000, while Willow, 14, claimed about $6000 and Bristol, 17, accounted for about $3400. One event was in New York City in October 2007, when Bristol accompanied the governor to Newsweek's third annual Women and Leadership Conference, toured the New York Stock Exchange and met local officials and business executives. The state ...

  • Pileated Woodpecker Battles Green Snake in Ichetucknee Springs State Park in Northern Florida. Some great footage of a pileated woodpecker at the Ichetucknee Springs State Park in Northern Florida. Before you say this is an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker please read...-Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) is a very large member of the woodpecker family, Picidae; it is officially listed as an endangered species, but by the end of the 20th century had widely been considered extinct. Reports of at least one male bird in Arkansas in 2004 and 2005 were suggested in April 2005 by a team led by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (Fitzpatrick et al., 2005). If confirmed, this would make the Ivory-billed Woodpecker a lazarus species, a species that is rediscovered alive after being considered extinct for some time. In June 2006, a $10000 reward was offered for information leading to the discovery of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker nest, roost or feeding site. In late September 2006, a team of ornithologists from Auburn University and the University of Windsor published a paper detailing suggestive evidence for the existence of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers along the Choctawhatchee River in northwest Florida (Hill et al., 2006). Despite the initial reports from both Arkansas or Florida, conclusive evidence for the existence of a population of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers, in the form of unambiguous photographs/videos, specimens, or DNA from feathers, has not been forthcoming. Nonetheless, land acquisition and restoration efforts are currently underway to protect the possible ...
