  • Deep Sea Robot LOST at Sea off Chile ABE Autonomous Benthic Explorer www.FunToWatch.TV NEWS SCIENCE MARCH 2010- Deep-sea robot, "ABE," which could function unmanned and untethered to it's surface ship, was lost at sea this week. The loss comes as a blow to scientists who study the oceans floor. ABE was on its 222nd research dive, studying a hydrothermal vent it had discovered off the coast of Chile on the Pacific floor, when all contact was lost with its surface vessel Melville. Scientists suspect that one of the glass spheres that helped keep ABE buoyant imploded. Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who designed and built the $1 million vehicle, believe that this implosion two miles undersea and under pressure of more than two tons per square inch, would have caused other spheres in ABE to implode. This would destroy on-board systems and leave the robot stranded at the bottom of the ocean floor. At the time of its loss, ABE, was researching the Chile Triple Junction, the only place on Earth where a mid-ocean ridge is being pushed beneath a continent in a deep ocean trench. ABE (Autonomous Benthic Explorer) was developed by a team of engineers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. With a gross weight of 1500 lbs. and a maximum operating depth of 5000 m. ABE particularly excels at near-bottom survey in rugged seafloor terrain. It has performed a variety of fully autonomous, precisely-navigated surveys, including fine-scale magnetic and bathymetric survey, photo mosaicking, and quantitative survey of hydrothermal ...
  • 2011 Elwha River Benthic Survey in the Strait of Juan de Fuca EPA divers with USGS work to baseline benthic conditions at the mouth of the Elwha River before dam removal. Scuba surveys to assess effects of Elwha dam removal on shallow, subtidal benthic communities Steve Rubin, Ian Miller, Nancy Elder, Reg Reisenbichler, Rusty Rodriguez, Jeff Duda, Rob Pedersen, Mike McHenry, and Matt Beirne; USGS Western Fisheries Research Center, Seattle, WA (SR, RR, RR, JD), UC Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, CA and WA Sea Grant, Port Angeles, WA (IM), USGS Western Fisheries Research Center Marrowstone Marine Station, Nordland, WA (NE), USEPA Region 10 Environmental Cleanup Office, Seattle, WA (RP), Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe (MM, MB). The impending removal of the Elwha River dams will affect marine habitats when sediments that have accumulated behind the dams for nearly 100 years are transported to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Deposited and suspended sediments can have a variety of effects on marine plants and animals including burial, inhibition of propagule settlement, light reduction affecting plant growth, damage to animal gills and filter feeding structures, and alteration of interactions among species with different tolerances and responses to sediment. The initial large sediment influx from release of accumulations in the reservoirs may stress nearshore communities, but in the long run communities may benefit from reestablishment of sediment delivery from the upper watershed. Scuba surveys were initiated in 2008 to characterize nearshore biological ...

  • Benthic Invertebrates on Rocky Substrates Off Calumet Harbor (1997) Here a diver turns over a number of rocks and observes invertebrate fauna found on the rocks. On the first rock you see a number of isopods crawling on the udnerside of the rock. An isopod can also be seen on the second rock, along with a net (boogery looking structure) created by a caddis fly larvae to collect food. Two amphipods can be seen swimming off of the third rock as it is turned as the image is zoomed in on a number of isopods. Zebra mussels can be seen attached to all of the rocks. This clip was taken before the introduction of Quagga mussel which have mostly replaced zebra mussels in Lake Michigan.

  • Talk to the Scientist: Benthic Macrofauna This film was created as a teacher resource for a KS3 and KS4 Biology lesson called "What animals live on the seafloor?". Bryony Pearce, Marine ecologist at Marine Ecological Surveys (MES) explains what benthic macrofauna are and why they were studied during scientific research into the ecology of the Humber, off the east coast of the United Kingdom. In 2008, the Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (MALSF) commissioned Regional Environmental Characterisation (REC) research into four main dredging regions in the United Kingdom -- the Thames, South Coast, East Coast and Humber. These studies involved experts from universities, survey companies and heritage organisations investigating the archaeology, geology and ecology of the seafloor. The aim of the studies was to ensure that we use the sea sustainably, without damaging its natural or physical heritage. This film was produced by Wes*** Archaeology as part of the Explore the Seafloor project, funded by MALSF to promote the results of the RECs.

About the size and weight of a small compact car, the Benthic Rover moves very slowly across the seafloor, taking photographs of the animals and sediment in its path. Every three to five meters (10 to 16 feet) the Rover stops and makes a series of measurements on the community of organisms living in the seafloor sediment. The Rover is the result of four years of hard work by a team of engineers and scientists led by MBARI project engineer Alana Sherman and marine biologist Ken Smith. These measurements will help scientists understand one of the ongoing mysteries of the ocean—how animals on the deep seafloor find enough food to survive. For more information, see:
