1 Learning & Playing Tuba/Trumpet/Euphonium/Baritone/Flugelhorn/French Horn/Cornet In this video, Brett Youens describes the two principles on which all valved brass instruments work, with the tuba used as an example. (Transcript) Hi. Let's look at brass instruments with valves and how they work. I have a tuba here; it could just as easily be a trumpet, or a French horn, or a flugelhorn, or a euphonium; they all work on the same principle. If I blow into the mouthpiece, then the air travels this path here, and comes out of the bell. Now, if we think about a trumpet, we'll notice the first principle of the two principles we'll need to know about how brass instruments work. A trumpet has a very short pathway for the air to flow through, and a tuba has a very long pathway. Trumpets produce very high notes, and tubas produce very low notes. So: The longer the pathway, the lower the note. The longer, the lower. So, if I want to produce a different note, then I'll need to lengthen my tuba. But, of course, I don't have time while I'm playing to get out a hammer and a nail and maybe some sort of smelting machine and lengthen my tuba. That's what the valves are for. By depressing a valve, you make sure that the air takes a detour, thereby lengthening the tuba. So if I press this first valve here, you'll see that the air takes an extra path. If I press the second -- this little baby valve here -- then it takes a detour of a shorter length. And if I press the third valve, then it's this long, winding, granddaddy-of-them-all valve, right? Baritone Euphonium Solo: Tarantelle (W.Rimmer) This is a baritone euphonium solo entitled "Tarantelle" by William Rimmer from the Artistic Soloist collection of unaccompanied solos published by Wright & Round. These solos can be played by all band instruments but are especially suited to brass instruments. I first heard this solo played by the great Lyndon Baglin on a Saydisc recording. The sound is much better if you listen using good quality headphones. I recorded the audio using a Zoom H4 portable digital recorder and then synchronized this file with the video.The H4 gives a much higher quality audio than is possible with the standard mic in a video camera. It was originally recorded at 96KHz/24 bit, but I had to reduce the quality slightly to 48kHz/16bit to create the mp3 file for upload to Youtube. Although some of the audio quality is lost, the true sound of a euphonium is captured very well (I hope you agree :). This why I like the recorder so much and use it to record my practice sessions, band practices etc. I use the recordings to identify my strengths and weaknesses and then plan my practice sessions to work on my weaknesses. As you can see, this is a tuba mouthpiece...a euphonium mouthpiece...a horn (also known as a french horn) mouthpiece (musicians, in general, prefer horn)...a trumpet mouthpiece. The principle we want to talk about today has something to do with mouthpieces, and that is the production of a beautiful tone on your instrument. There are basically 3 steps: sing it/buzz it/play it. So if I want to play this melody, I should be able to sing it, I should be able to buzz it, and then I should be able to play it. So let's talk about why we should sing it/buzz it/and play it. It has to do with the difference between a piano and a valved brass instrument. If I see a key on a piano and press it, then there's no problem producing the pitch that I'm wanting to produce, because all I have to do is press the key. But on a valved brass instrument, if I press any given combination of valves, I could produce an infinite number of pitches using that fingering. For example...So how do my lips know which note they're supposed to produce? Well, the answer is: My ear tells my lips what to do. So I need to find a way to test whether my ear knows what it's supposed to tell my lips. So let's take this melody...Now I'll try to sing it...And you ...

Although his reputation was initially based on his performance of Romantic lieder, Quasthoff has proven to have a remarkable range from the Baroque cantatas of Bach to solo jazz improvisations. Quasthoff was born in Hildesheim, Germany, with serious birth defects caused by his mother's exposure during pregnancy to the drug thalidomide which was prescribed as an antiemetic to combat her morning sickness. Thomas Quasthoff is unusually short (about four feet tall) due to shortening of the long bones in his legs, and he has phocomelia of the upper extremities with very short or absent long bones and flipper-like appearance of his hands.

Already in the late-1950s, Stan Kenton had an appropriate nickname for the baritone beast: "The Knife." Pepper Adams and Nick Brignola were indisputably, unquestionably the two greatest bari sax players ever. No other baritonist has ever come close. (Frank Basile, keep practicing) Pepper Adams did his best work in the 1970-1980 period. Recommeded Pepper Adams albums/CDs from this decade: "Ephemera", "Reflectory", "Be Bop?" [with Barry Altschul], "Baritone Madness" [Nick Brignola], "The Master", "One For Bird" [Bishop Norman Williams], "Twelfth & Pingree", "New Life" [Thad Jones/Mel Lewis], "Julian", "Four On The Outside" [Curtis Fuller], "Live in Europe", "Live Jazz By the Sea", just to name a few... "Urban Dreams" (1981) is also phenomenal, but it's a great pity he used a crappy new mouthpiece (and his new sax) during this recording (he promply discarded the piece-of-junk mouthpiece for another one that improved the sound quality, although it was never as good as the old Berg Larsen he had acquired in the late 1940s -- the one you see in the above video).
