Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) works by propagating a single laser pulse through a Diffractive Optical Element that splits it into five beams. These beams then strike and are backscattered from the lunar surface. From the return pulse, the LOLA electronics determine the time of flight which, accounting for the speed of light, provides a precise measurement of the range from the spacecraft to the lunar surface. These range measurements, combined with accurate tracking of the spacecraft's location, are used to build a map revealing the contours of the lunar landscape.

VICTORIAN APPARATUS SPIRIT PREDICTOR FROM CONROW-TESLA This is a short piece about the work AD Conrow did back in the 1920s and '30s using Tesla Technology at ADC Radio Labs. They used the high output power of the Tesla-Westinghouse Turbines at Niagara Falls to power their equipment to experiment with invisibility cloaking, etc., similar to the later vaunted Philadelphia Experiment. One spin-off concerned Quantum Fluctuations and Chaotic Effects in Random Events. Conrow later utilized this effect in what he called his Psychical Predictor Apparatus. Iron Pyrite Crystal Detectors were stimulated with strong 525 nanometer green light and the back-scattered was measured with what he called his Phantom Oculus. 16 Elbow - Scattered Black and Whites - Amsterdam's Paradiso 25 June 2 HQ link & lyrics: Been climbing trees I've skinned my knees My hands are black the sun is going down She scruffs my hair in the kitchen steam She's listening to the dream I weaved today Crosswords through the bathroom door While someone sings the theme-tune to the news And my sister buzzes through the room leaving perfume in the air And that's what triggered this. I come back here from time to time I shelter here some days. A high-back chair. He sits and stares A thousand yards and whistles Marching-band (Boom-ching) Kneeling by and speaking up He reaches out and I take a Massive hand. Disjointed tales That flit between short trousers And a full dress uniform And he talks of people ten years Gone like I've known them all my life Like scattered black 'n' whites. I come back here from time to time I shelter here some days. I come back here from time to time I shelter here some days.

Internal Scanning in Real-time : DigInfo DigInfo - movie.diginfo.tv Image looking inside an object in real time. This device can dynamically display the surface as well as the optical coherence of 2D and 3D images, at the same level of clarity as with X-ray CT scanners, MRI machines, and ultrasonic confocal microscopes. The Optical Coherence Tomography is composed of probes, a scanning laser unit, and a high-speed computer for measuring and ***yzing and software. It features a broad-spectrum optical source with a much wider wavelength than a traditional one. It can quickly measure biological objects and industrial products (such as plastic goods, semiconductors, coating paints, and protective films) by using the intervention of the near-infrared back scattered light without destroying the material, even if those objects are not transparent at the visible wavelength (as through an electronic microscope or under the stereoscopic microscope.) You can look inside an object in real time.
Nath Saowadee, Risø DTU (2 of 3) Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) is widely used in metallurgy and geology to study relation of material properties and its crystal structure as well as performing phase identification. Extending to 3D EBSD provides more accurate information in grain/phase size, shape and distribution, grain boundaries and crystal orientation in 3D. Presently EBSD has not been routinely applied to solid oxide fuel or electrolysis cell materials despite the fact that much work has been done on reconstructing the phases and microstructure of their electrodes. Combining 3D EBSD information with the 3D structure of their electrode materials provides another possible phase segmentation means and also provides crystallographic information of crystallites (grains) within the agglomerated particles in electrodes. Crystallographic information is expected to help understand phenomena such as structure coarsening. There are two important limits in performing 3D EBSD experiments, these are acquisition time and resolution. The acquisition time is dependent on how large the volume to be acquired and speed of EBSD scanning. Large volumes need long periods of FIB milling in serial sectioning. The EBSD scanning speed depends upon EBSD pattern quality (signal quality). The spatial resolution limit of 3D EBSD is around 50 nm in the FIB milling direction and down to 5 nm in the EBSD plane and angular resolution limit is 0.5°. Both limits are however quite sensitive to several material and operating ...

Fred Lipsius and Darcel Wilson with Blood, Sweat and Tears 10/15/09 - God Bless The Child - A week before Blood, Sweat and Tears performed at the Berklee Performance Center (10 I got a call from Larry Dorr, BS&Ts' manager, inviting me to sit in with the band on "God Bless the Child". I accepted his offer and thanked him... It was very enjoyable for me meeting some of the band members in the dressing room and hangin' out once again with Steve Katz, after so many years! Later, on stage for the sound check/rehearsal, I was warmly greeted by the other band members. The drummer reminded me that, when he was 21, he came over from Italy to study at Berklee and I had been his teacher in a small group ensemble! Darcel Wilson (a Berklee teacher like myself) had been invited to sing "God Bless the Child" with the band. She sounded great at both the rehearsal and the concert. Of course, it was a bit strange performing with the band, mostly because Steve Katz and myself were the 'only' founding members on stage with the band. (Back in the early 1990's, Steve and I had performed twice at the "Bottom Line" at BS&T reunions with Al Kooper plus other original BS&T members). The friendliness and respect I felt from all the band members made it very comfortable for me playing with them. Those few minutes on stage brought back scattered memories of being 25+ years old, a young dude, touring with this very famous band! After performing, I sat in the audience with my wife and my webmaster friend, John Pritchard (who had traveled 3 hours to catch the concert ...

Laser-based Tracking Smart Laser-Scanner for 3D Human-Machine Interface Alvaro Cassinelli, Stephane Perrin, Masatoshi Ishikawa, University of Tokyo, Japan The problem of tracking hands and fingers on natural scenes has received much attention using passive acquisition vision systems and computationally intense image processing. We are currently studying a simple active tracking system using a laser diode, steering mirrors, and a single non-imaging detector, which is capable of acquiring three dimensional coordinates in real time without the need of any image processing at all. Essentially, it is a smart rangefinder scanner that instead of continuously scanning over the full field of view restricts its scanning area, on the basis of a real-time ***ysis of the backscattered signal, to a very narrow window precisely the size of the target. The complexity of the whole setup is equivalent to that of a portable laser-based barcode reader, making the system compatible with wearable computers.
