Vivaldi: Cessate, omai cessate, RV 684 (2/2) - Scholl High resolution and stereo sound: Antonio Vivaldi Cessate, omai cessate, RV 684 cantata for contralto voice, instruments and basso continuo In this recording: Andreas Scholl, countertenor Ensemble 415 Chiara Banchini Harmonia Mundi The cantata follows the typical scheme of Recitative--Aria--Recitative--Aria (RARA). There is a variant of this cantata (RV 684a), an earlier version without the first recitative and quite different from this one. The only source of the text, by an unknown author, is the autograph score. One observation is that a similar text was used in an aria from Vivaldi's opera "L'incoro***one di Dario", at the opening of the second act. The text by Adriano Morselli is as follows: Cessa tiranno amor di tormentarmi più. Già barbaro e crudel quest'anima fedel hai posta in servitù. "... if one examines the content, one sees that in the first aria the aggrieved singer resolves to kill himself; in the following recitative he prepares to die; in the last aria he pictures himself as the "shade of a Bacchante" on the gloomy banks of Acheron, ready to take revenge. So we have a conventional, but complete plot. ... As for the content, there is a mixture of ferocity and commiseration arising from the fact that the singer addresses two different objects: his "cruel memories" and his "wretched, injured and forsaken heart". Only in the last two verses does cruelty pertain no longer to the memories but to the beloved's "pitiless countenance" and ...

Orpheus in the Underworld/ Final/Shorter Opera Theatre Shorter College Opera Theatre performs the final scene from Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld. Featuring Lenora Green as Eurydice. In this scene, Eurydice attends disguised as a bacchante, a follower of Bacchus, god of wine, but Pluto realises who she is and blocks Jupiter's path when Jupiter tries to make off with her. Jupiter again accuses Pluto of abducting Eurydice. When Orpheus and Public Opinion appear, Jupiter tells Orpheus he can take his wife away, but only if he does not look back at her as they go. When Orpheus fails this test, Pluto claims Eurydice. Jupiter, however, takes her away from Pluto by announcing that he is turning her into a real bacchante. Everyone, except Pluto and Public Opinion, is delighted and the operetta climaxes with the energetic Can-Can, danced by all the gods and goddesses.

"Music for a while" Bacchante changes *** without a scalpel An old oil painting, entitled "Bacchante - Luca Gordano", underwent a fascinating transformation during restoration. Thick layers of brown varnish and crude Victorian overpainting were carefully removed to reveal the splendid torso of a young man. The original paint was found to be rock hard and is thought to be at least two hundred years old, As to the artist, could it possibly be Luca Giordano the celebrated Neapolitan 1632-1705? Is it a fragment from a larger painting which was cut down, repainted and sold as a portrait of a girl? Please help solve the mystery. The song is "Music for a while" by Purcell
Ship Horns - The Steam Horn from a Leander Class Frigate, Royal Navy. This horn is a mistery!!! It's a jacketed steam horn (I took the Jacket off), with a 200mm diaphragm, similar to a Kockums or Leskie Tyfon. It comes from the Portsmouth area, in the UK. It has no markings nor ID of any kind. But I have once been given a few pics of the scuttling of a New Zealand Navy frigate. On these pics, I could see a pair of horns identical to this one. They had been salvaged from the ship. This frigate was HMNZS Wellington, F69, formerly HMS Bacchante, sold to the Kiwis by the British. HMS Bacchante was from the Leander Class, a serie of 26 ships, said to be some of the finest vessels in the modern Royal Navy. Many of these ships have been sold abroad, some sunk as targets, some scrapped in England or India. I have no idea about which ship it comes from nor if it really comes from one of these frigates. Any help would be welcome. The show starts at 01.40. Photos Credits: Wikipedia and Caron Mills. Music: Land Of Hope And Glory, by Edward Elgar. Thanks for your attention.

X-Men: Bacchante Another Xmen RP fanvideo. This one is for my friend and post-mate, Bacch. Powers: Captivation/Fascination. He constantly exudes an aura that causes people to idealize him when they see him, in essence making him seem perfect to them. Background: Nathan can't remember anything of his early childhood. As far as he knows, he woke up in an orphanage eight years ago. There was no record of who his parents were, or where he'd come from. He escaped when he was twelve, and was picked up by a man who ran a group of beggar children in New York. Nathan was greatly prized by the man, for some reason adults seemed to like giving him money. He figured out he was different after the man, who was fairly cruel to the children, got hit by a bus. Nathan had been standing on the other side of the crossing and the man had just frozen, and stopped moving. Bacchante made his living being a thief until he met Kai and got swept up into a whole new adventure...
