Entry from: Patate, Ecuador Entry Title: "Patate Fiesta" Entry: "Patate is a small agricultural canton (village) in a big valley, about a one hour bus ride away from Banos. We heard that there was going to be a fiesta there, celebrating Senor del Terremoto, and that special buses had been arranged to take people to the village from Banos. Several local people told us that it would be interesting place to visit so we went to Patate (potato?) on Saturday morning. In the morning, when we went, the weather was perfect - not too hot or cold. The Patate valley is lined with very steep mountains which people and animals have learned to deal with. The farmers cultivate their land on near vertical fields which is really something to see. You do not see terraces here. Several types of fruit are grown here - mandarins, apples, pears, peaches, grapes, babacos, tree tomatoes, oranges, passion fruit, claudias, and others. Some of these fruits are readily available and we don't have a clue what they are. Babacos are big, long yellow fruit used to make juice. Tree tomatoes are little, round fruit that make a very tasty juice also. They are not at all like tomatoes. There are lots of cows, goats and pigs in the fields.
