Using a Simulated PS2 controller, I can write software to play certain video games autonomously (no human involved). Guitar Hero is a simple game to start with. Seems I see them on almost every trip. I'm not sure what company they work for, I've always assumed Google but I see these cars quite frequently in Silicon Valley. This time I had my HD camera ready. Note that there's two cameras on top: one that looks like it's recording video (the black thing on top) and one that's recording stills (the rotating camera). Also note that they didn't like me shooting video, when they noticed me they slowed down quickly.

  • A Black Hawk Helicopter Flies Autonomously The US Army has made history by successfully testing a flight by an automated Black Hawk helicopter. There were pilots aboard the aircraft which took to the skies over the Diablo Mountain Range in San Jose, California. But all manoeuvres were carried out autonomously, with the JUH-60A Black Hawk navigating its way through a 23-mile course of hills and valleys. Dubbed the RASCAL - Rotorcraft Aircrew Systems Concept Airborne Laboratory - the aircraft was equipped with a range of technologies, including computers and sensors, for it to operate on its own. It was able to sense its surrounding terrain, assess risk, avoid obstacles, process statistics, as well as fly autonomously during the two-hour exercise. The helicopter maintained an altitude of 200 and 400 feet at an average speed of 40 knots and identified a safe landing spot within a forest clearing. It also approached and hovered at 60 feet during the final phase of the test-flight, organised by the Army Research, Development and Engineering Command's Aviation and Missile Centre.   • Autonomous Black Hawk Flight WTA 5 Nov 2012 v2 Army Helicopter flies over California "without" pilots MOFFETT FIELD, Calif., November 29, 2012 — Recently over the skies east of San Jose, Calif. you might have seen a Black Hawk helicopter flying low and slow. And while pilots were aboard the aircraft, all flight maneuvers were conducted autonomously. In a November 5, 2012 flight over the Diablo Range, the US Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center successfully demonstrated low-level autonomous behaviors critical to the next generation of military rotorcraft: obstacle field navigation and safe landing area determination. Terrain sensing, statistical processing, risk assessment, threat avoidance, trajectory generation, and autonomous flight control were performed in real‐time during the two‐hour test flight.

  • Autonomous Aerial Navigation in Confined Indoor Environments This video presents experimental results of autonomous navigation in confined indoor environments using an aerial robot. The robot is equipped with an IMU, camera, and laser scanner with deflective mirrors. All computations are performed onboard using a 1.6GHz atom processor. The robot is able to navigate autonomously in indoor or outdoor, GPS-denied environments. A SLAM module with vision based loop closure allows the robot to map large-scale, multi-floor environments. A sparse 3D map is generated on the robot based on sensor data, enabling high-level planning and visualization. An RRT* based planner provides an anytime planning solution that fits the computational constraints of the robot. This planner also enables online re-planning and obstacle avoidance. An LQR optimal controller with external force compensation enables reliable autonomous flight in highly constrained environments, such as hallways, doors, and windows. The robot is able to track the high-level plans accurately.

  • Autonomous Vehicle #1 BCIT Mechatronics and Robotics Department Autonomous Vehicle - BCIT Mechatronics and Robotics Department - Student Project by David and Robin. The purpose of this project was to build an autonomous vehicle to compete in the RoboMagellan contest. An RC car chassis was modified with a new motor and controller. A GPS, sonar sensors, optical encoder, webcam, electronic compass, and netbook computer were added so the robot can autonomously navigate between waypoints and locate orange traffic cones. This was their final project for the Mechatronics and Robotics department at BCIT, the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

A sample consensus algorithm [5] fits a planar model to the points on the floor, and this planar model is fed into the controller as the sensed altitude. All processing is done on the on-board 1.6 GHz Intel Atom based computer, running Linux (Ubuntu 10.04). A VICON [6] motion capture system is used to provide the other necessary degrees of freedom (lateral and yaw) and acts as a safety backup to the Kinect altitude--in case of a dropout in the altitude reading from the Kinect data, the VICON based reading is used instead.   • Autonomous Robotic Truss Reconfiguration and Manipulation Learn more: creativemachines.cornell.edu Accepted for Publication in IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine Robot shown developed by Franz Nigl, Jeremy Blum, and Shuguang Li under the direction of Dr. Hod Lipson. This video presents a robot capable of autonomously traversing and manipulating a 3D truss structure. The robot is able to approach and traverse multiple structural joints using a combination of translational and rotational motions. A key factor in allowing reliable motion and engagements is the use of specially designed structural building blocks comprised of bidirectional geared rods. A set of traversal plans, each comprised of basic motion primitives, were ***yzed for speed, robustness, and repeatability. Paths covering eight joints are demonstrated, as well as automatic element assembly and disassembly. We suggest that the robot architecture and truss module design, such as the one presented here, could open the door to robotically assembled, maintained, and reconfigured structures that would ordinarily be difficult, risky, or time consuming for humans to construct.
  • Autonomous Drink Serving This video shows a demonstration of a PR2 and a TurtleBot working together in an autonomous drink serving application. A drink is ordered through a web interface and immediately the TurtleBut -- called BusBot -- is called to the kitchen. Meanwhile the PR2 already opens the fridge, finds the ordered drink and retrieves it. The PR2 then places the drink in a drinkholder on top of the BusBot. Now, the BusBot gets the autonomously navigates to the person's location and delivers the drink.

Dozens of research teams have competed in a series of autonomous-helicopter challenges posed by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI); progress has been so rapid that the last two challenges have involved indoor navigation without the use of GPS. But MIT's Robust Robotics Group — which fielded the team that won the last AUVSI contest — has set itself an even tougher challenge: developing autonomous-control algorithms for the indoor flight of GPS-denied airplanes. At the 2011 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), a team of researchers from the group described an algorithm for calculating a plane's trajectory; in 2012, at the same conference, they presented an algorithm for determining its "state" — its location, physical orientation, velocity and acceleration. Now, the MIT researchers have completed a series of flight tests in which an autonomous robotic plane running their state-estimation algorithm successfully threaded its way among pillars in the parking garage under MIT's Stata Center. An early crop of advanced crash avoidance technologies includes some clear success stories when it comes to preventing crashes, insurance claim ***yses by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) show. Forward collision avoidance systems, particularly those that can brake autonomously, along with adaptive headlights, which shift direction as the driver steers, show the biggest crash reductions. Lane departure warning appears to hurt, rather than help, though it's not clear why, and other systems, such as blind spot detection and park assist, aren't showing clear effects on crash patterns yet.

Details will be presented in the paper "Improved Proposals for Highly Accurate Localization Using Range and Vision Data" by Stefan Oßwald, Armin Hornung, and Maren Bennewitz at the IROS 2012 conference. The robot integrates observations from the laser range scanner on top of its head with observations from the camera located in its lower head. By consistently matching the known staircase model to a set of images acquired on each step, the robot is able to accurately locate itself towards the stairs and to climb them reliably.
