  • SVO-Original Video.MPG LINGUISTICS: This video explains the syntactic concept of SVO. (SVO) SUBJECT-VERB-OBJECT, a syntactic order prevailing in English, as well as in a few other languages. The concept of SVO is used here to help students learning Spanish (a language that can follow an SVO pattern, though not always). The idea is that students of Spanish use SVO and then replace each one of those terms with words of equal grammatical function -thus constructing new sentences in that language.

  • ActionScript as a language for creating JS applications with jQuery support and debugger At the moment, we have a tool to generate the JS code from AS3. We have a great IDE, that knows how JS-generated code matches the AS3 code in the editor. We have a debugger that allows you to set breakpoints in AS3 code and stop the JS execution flow. We have a ton of useful things, such as OOP, autocomplete, type-checking, smart refactorings and moreover language extensions. We have a jQuery support: autocomplete and syntactic sugar. We have the opportunity to extend the actual functionality of the IDE and create custom languages (the editor is based on Jetbrains MPS platform). We have loads of know-hows accumulated over the years of Flash community existence. This enables us to create Rich Internet Applications on AS3 that run right in browser, without Flash Player. Is it a dream? Is it a Utopia? We're very interested in JS developers opinion. Does the JavaScript Community need an OOP language? A syntactic sugar? Are JS developers under way to this direction? The uprise of coffeecript and dart (as well as things like lesscss) sustain this trend. On the other side, may be this technology is out of demand and we're just wasting our time? What is your opinion? The next version of the IDE will have even more advanced debugger, jQuery-plugins and d3.js support. All the available AS3 language extensions - generics, collections, traits, events flow, etc. (flashout- - will also work in JS runtime. • Articulate: a Conversational Interface for Visual ***ytics 'Articulate' is a methodology that uses natural language to interact with visualizations. It is part of 'Project Lifelike' - a research initiative to provide a more natural alternative for interacting with computers. As computing becomes more accessible through the Internet, and more recently mobile phone applications, there is renewed interest in organic and seamless ways to harness the power of this technology. Human speech is a promising and attractive approach. 'Articulate' is a system that applies natural language processing and machine learning techniques in the area of data visualization and ***ysis. Its goal is to automatically translate natural language queries into meaningful representations of data. 'Articulate' incorporates a natural language parser with machine learning algorithms to translate spoken language. The user's input sentence is parsed into a syntactic tree tagged with part-of-speech labels, from which a feature vector can be extracted to represent the query. Based on this set of features, a supervised learning algorithm identifies the intended visual ***ytic task, which is used to guide a graph generation algorithm in determining the appropriate visualization to present to the user. The ultimate goal of this research is to allow users to employ advanced visualization techniques without the burden of first having to learn a complex or cumbersome user interface. 'Articulate' is a step towards a time when computers will understand the user's ...
  • You'll Be Back! In the past 6 months, Paco has started sometimes saying "You'll be back!"instead of "I'll be back!" (a phrase he still uses every day). The only time he says this new variant is when he greets me and/or Patricia after we have been away for an extended period (several hours). As intelligent as I believe Paco is, I think it is unlikely a bird whose use of words consists mainly of contextually-appropriate labels and expressions could understand the meaning of a pronoun in a syntactic/semantic sense. Yet what Paco says cannot be mimicry. He originally learned the phrase "I'll be back" by imitating what Patricia and I said to him when leaving the house; then (very creatively) he extended the use and meaning of the phrase. But we never said to him, "You'll be back." That phrase would have made no sense. So what's going on here? Wish I knew. Recorded June 19, 2010

  • The Importance of Communication I.The Importance of Communication (Introduction) munication is extremely important. The way a person communicates can affect the relationships in that persons life. A person can make an enemy or a friend, land a job or lose a job; just by the way he or she communicates a message. b.Every human being communicates, sometimes even unknowingly. We use language, whether it is English, Spanish, ASL, or German, as well as context, non-verbal cues, and prosody. So what exactly is communication? II.What is Communication? a.Grammar and Structure i.Every Language has a set of rules, called grammar. These rules dictate how to use the language to convey a message. For instance: English is a syntactic Language (Danesi, 2009) meaning that word order is important. The boy loves the girl and The girl loves the boy convey two different meanings by only changing the order of the words. b.Prosody i.Aside from grammar, the meaning of the message is also conveyed using what is called prosody. Prosody, in general, is everything other than the words or the signs you are using. English, intonation is prosody. The words you went to the store can be conveyed as a statement, a question, or even an accusation depending on the intonation used. [examples: You went to the store. You went to the store? (simple question) You went to the store? (accusation, ie Why would you go to the store? We have everything you need here!)] c.Lingustic Registers i.The way we communicate with others changes based on ...

  • Peer to Peer Web Search with Minerva Google TechTalks August 3, 2006 Gerhard Weikum ABSTRACT The peer-to-peer (P2P) computing paradigm is an intriguing alternative to Google-style search engines for querying and ranking Web content. In a network with many thousands or millions of peers the storage and access load requirements per peer are much lighter than for a centralized server farm. On the other hand, P2P Web search also poses major challenges, one of them being the computation, dissemination, and efficient management of statistical measures that are crucial for good search strategies and ranking algorithms. Statistics (eg, local and global document frequencies, overlap among peers' contents, PageRank-style authority) need...
  • hx01c A neo-Leibnizian definition of the virtual house might then be this: it is the house that holds together the most, and most complicated, different possible worlds in the same container, allowing them to exist together along a constructed plane with no need of a preestablished harmony. - Rajchman, The Virtual House. With House X, the formal transformations supported a level of detail hitherto unseen in the earlier Eisenman houses. The early houses recorded a simple series of transformations. House X represented multiple transformations, a temporary suspension of strategic formal maneuvers in which space appears to gel. Issues of volumetric solidity are explored that resume later in House 11a and the Guardiola House. The famous axonometric model represented the last step in the development of House X. This digital version of the project is an opportunity to experience the design directly, and reveals a complex score of unaddressed haptic effects. The design could almost be considered an investigation into how light can enter a space. Varying over the four quadrants, the transformations open a series of slots and breaks that allow light to enter the space in a variety of ways resulting in numerous transparency effects. While there is little information about materials other than colored and textured stucco with sheetrock interiors, the window details have a syntactic complexity worthy of a larger building. In this respect, House X served as a bridge between the small and ...

(Tenor) Tejano, Josh (Tenor) Tocong, Anadelle (Soprano) Tocong, Judell (Choir Director of Greatness) Jews also call God Adonai, Hebrew for "Lord" (Hebrew: אֲדֹנָי). Formally, this is plural ("my Lords"), but the plural is usually construed as a respectful, and not a syntactic plural. (The singular form is Adoni, "my lord". This was used by the Phoenicians for the god Tammuz and is the origin of the Greek name Adonis. Jews only use the singular to refer to a distinguished person: in the plural, "rabotai", lit. "my masters", is used in both Mishnaic and modern Hebrew.) Since pronouncing YHWH is considered sinful, Jews use Adonai instead in prayers, and colloquially would use Hashem ("the Name"). When the Masoretes added vowel pointings to the text of the Hebrew Bible around the eighth century CE, they gave the word YHWH the vowels of Adonai, to remind the reader to say Adonai instead. (

  • The Long Road from Text to Meaning Google Tech Talks May 3, 2007 ABSTRACT Computers have given us a new way of thinking about language. Given a large sample of language, or corpus, and computational tools to process it, we can approach language as physicists approach forces and chemists approach chemicals. This approach is noteworthy for missing out what, from a language-user's point of view, is important about a piece of language: its meaning. I shall present this empiricist approach to the study of language and show how, as we develop accurate tools for lemmatisation, part-of-speech tagging and parsing, we move from the raw input -- a character stream -- to an ***ysis of that stream in increasingly rich terms: words, lemmas,...
