Lights Behind the Fairing For some time now I've been contemplating whether placing lights behind a fairing illuminates the fairing sufficiently to increase one's visual footprint. I had come to the conclusion that the answer was "yes", but not without some reservation, so I thought I'd shoot a little video this morning to shed a little "light" (sorry about that) on the subject. It was a full moon last night, but the first run was shot in the forest, so there was little to no ambient light. The second run was shot in the open near two main arterials and there was considerably more ambient light, both from the moon and from nearby street lights. In both cases I turned off my helmet light and blinkies. The lower light is a B&M Lumotec Oval Plus mounted on the fork crown, the other is a Cateye EL400 mounted on the handlebar crossbrace. The bike is an Easy Racers Tour Easy with a Super Zzipper fairing. The fairing is unscratched, but there was a moderate amount of condensation built up under the upper half of the fairing. I wouldn't say the video is definitive by any measure, but the fairing gives off much less glow than I expected. My only assumption can be that most of the glow I'm seeing while I ride is being directed back at me and not outward toward the camera (and drivers).
