8. Plato, Part III: Arguments for the immortality of the soul (cont.) Death (PHIL 176) The lecture focuses exclusively on one argument for the immortality of the soul from Plato's Phaedo, namely, "the argument from simplicity." Plato suggests that in order for something to be destroyed, it must have parts, that is, it must be possible to "take it apart." Arguing that the soul is simple, that it does not have parts, Plato believes that it would logically follow that the soul is indestructible. 9. Plato, Part IV: Arguments for the immortality of the soul (cont.) Death (PHIL 176) Professor Kagan elaborates on the "argument from simplicity" and discusses in detail Plato's claims that the soul is simple, changeless and therefore indestructible. The final Platonic argument under discussion is the "argument from essential properties" in which the essential properties of the soul are addressed. At the end of the lecture the question of whether one needs to argue for physicalism is posed. Neil Tyson talks about UFOs and the argument from ignorance. From: St Petersburg College 6605 5th Avenue North St Petersburg, FL 33710-6899 Link for full video:Cosmic Quandaries with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson - The argument from ignorance, also known as argumentum ad ignorantiam ("appeal to ignorance" , argument by lack of imagination, or negative evidence, is a logical fallacy in which it is claimed that a premise is true only because it has not been proven false, or is false only because it has not been proven true. The argument from personal incredulity, also known as argument from personal belief or argument from personal conviction, refers to an assertion that because one personally finds a premise unlikely or unbelievable, the premise can be assumed to be false, or alternatively that another preferred but unproven premise is true instead. Both arguments commonly share this structure: a person regards the lack of evidence for one view as constituting proof that another view is true. The types of fallacies discussed in this article should not be confused with the reductio ad absurdum method of argument, in which a valid logical contradiction of the form "A and not A" is used to disprove a premise.

4. Introduction to Plato's Phaedo; Arguments for the existence of the soul, Part II Death (PHIL 176) After a brief introduction to Plato's Phaedo, more arguments are offered in this lecture in defense of the existence of an immaterial soul. The emphasis here is on the fact that we need to believe in the existence of a soul in order to explain the claim that we possess free will. This is an argument dualists use as an objection to the physicalists: since no merely physical entity could have free will, there must be more to us than just being a physical object. 3. Arguments for the existence of the soul, Part I Death (PHIL 176) The lecture focuses on arguments that might be offered as proof for the existence of the soul. 6. Arguments for the existence of the soul, Part IV; Plato, Part I Death (PHIL 176) The lecture begins with a continued discussion of the Cartesian argument and its weaknesses. The lecture then turns to Plato's metaphysical views in the context of his work, Phaedo. The key point in the discussion is the idea that in addition to the ordinary empirical world that we are familiar with, we posit the existence of a second realm in which the Platonic forms exist. These forms are the abstract properties that we attribute to physical objects, such as beauty, justice, goodness and so on. Since it is the soul that conceives of these Platonic forms and ideas, Plato argues that the soul not only outlives the body but lasts forever. It is perfect, immaterial and indestructible. Phil: Miracle Arguments Beg the Question This is a response to Agnosticman77s video about Miracle claims and the resurrection While I have to nitpick and point out that while Agman said he was not making a Humian argument, that is more or less what Hume said. However, there is a difference between having it be impossible to believe and miracle CLAIM, and believing that miracles are impossible. The problem is that the resurrectionist simply have no criteria, or at best self serving criteria for when we should believe a miracle claim. What they should attack is the idea that we judge claims on a probability heuristic. However such a move seems doomed to fail. From the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Aquinas (Summa Contra Gentiles, III) says those things are properly called miracles which are done by divine agency beyond the order commonly observed in nature (praeter ordinem communiter observatum in rebus). A miracle, philosophically speaking, is never a mere coincidence no matter how extraordinary or significant. (If you miss a plane and the plane crashes, that is not a miracle unless God intervened in the natural course of events causing you to miss the flight.) A miracle is a supernaturally (divinely) caused event - an event (ordinarily) different from what would have occurred in the normal (natural) course of events. It is a divine overriding of, or interference with, the natural order. As we can see, we can only rightly claim a miracle has occurred if there is a miracle causer. And so any ...
