  • Citizen Architect: SXSW 2010 Accepted Film Snakebit is a 60-minute documentary film on the late architect Samuel Mockbee and the radical educational design/build program known as the Rural Studio that he co-founded deep in poverty-stricken Hale County, Alabama. Mockbee was a celebrated architect, artist and educator who instilled his passion and philosophy in those he believed will become a new generation of 'citizen architects.' Snakebit is a rich, probing film that shows how a group of young architects' empowered by Mockbee's belief in making the world a better place' use their ingenuity and compassion to provide housing for people who their profession all too often overlooks. Guided by interviews with Mockbee, the film follows a twenty-six year-old first-time instructor at the Rural Studio as he leads a group of 20 year-old students in the process of crafting a custom home for their charismatic, destitute client, Jimmie Lee Matthews. Known within the community as Music Man because of his obsessive passion for soul music, Jimmie Lee maintains a healthy zeal for life, blasting R&B from his collection of used stereos and boasting that he 'ain't never met a stranger!' His infectious, optimistic attitude despite decades of hard living rubs off on the students as they form a strong bond with him throughout the film. The film supplements this fly-on-the-wall footage with perspective from Mockbee's peers and those he has influenced. The dialogue offers both praise and criticism of the Rural Studio approach and presents ...

  • How to write like an architect Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all vertical lines. Lastly, when making your Os, Qs, Cs, Gs, even 8s and 9s, the letters and ...
  • Termites - Life's Ultimate Architects DVD this is pulled from only available from the UK: bit.ly This bit about termites is so amazing, that it completely altered my understanding of the social order and man's supposed dominance of it. This termite colony's complex and unlikely construction is truly a testament to the incredible power of natural selection. The structure has air conditioning, a sewage system, food storage, fungus cultivation, and would be over a mile high if built to human scale. Truly astounding. Watch for the creepy shots of the termite queen near the end to see James Cameron's obvious inspiration for the queen at the end of Aliens.

  • Santiago Calatrava: finding architecture's soul The renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has been speaking to euronews. His designs - which take their inspiration from nature - provoke strong reactions; they are either loved or loathed. Calatrava, who considers himself to be above all an artist, says an architect is also a philanthropist. In the past cities were designed to last, today they provide an insight into the soul of the lost civilisations that built them. So, if architecture is the most tangible sign of a civilisation how then to preserve the sacred nature of a location?

  • So you want to be an architect - Part 2 Hi. My name is Doug Patt. And this is So You want to be an Architect? A seven part series exploring the architect. This is lesson two. What does an architect make? On the surface this sounds like a dumb question. An architect makes buildings. But if you look below the surface youll see that the answer is much more meaningful. Ralph Waldo Emerson (who lived from 1803 1882), was a well-known writer, philosopher and poet. He said of Greek architecture, it is the flowering of geometry. Translated, Emerson was referring to the Greek architects elaboration and mastery of shape and form. Anne Louise Germaine de Stael (who lived from 1766 1817) is a little known Swiss author who lived in Paris and abroad. She is quoted as saying architecture is frozen music. In simple terms her comment means that architects make a kind of static harmony of sound. Philip Schaff (who lived from 1819 1893) was a Swiss born, Protestant theologian. He said, architecture is a handmaid of devotion, a beautiful church is a sermon in stone. Elaborating a bit on Shaffs comment we can imply that architecture, like a sermon, is also a kind of message or story. And finally John Ruskin an author, poet and artist (who lived from 1819 1900) said of architecture that the mere sight of it, may contribute to (his) mental health, power and pleasure. In other words architecture is an Inspiration. So, lets move beyond the specifics of what each person what referring to and draw some general conclusions. In simple ...

  • How to design like an architect Hi, Im Doug Patt and this is How to design like an architect. I thought the best way to talk about design would be to create a dream home for someone, but first, lets talk about the design process. An architect, like any design professional draws on a wellspring of information. How we design is based to some extent on what we know. What we know can be based on the school we went to, the books weve read, the magazines we like to look at, where we grew up, our friends and relatives, the occupations weve held and in general, our life experiences. A professor named Edmund Bacon (actually the father of the actor Kevin Bacon) told me something once that I will never forget. He said, Its in the doing that the idea comes. That is, we must sit and work through something before we can find the best way to solve a problem. Solving a design problem is essentially taking what we know and putting it together with that particular challenge. When an architect sits down to problem solve they frequently sketch. Sketching is one of the best ways to work out the solution to a problem. And I believe that its exactly what Edmund Bacon meant when he said its in the doing that the idea comes. Before we design our dream home I need to give you a little insight into one of my favorite architects. Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 August 27, 1965) was a Swiss born architect, writer and painter among other things. He was well known as a modern architect and for his theories & approach to architecture ...

  • Dynamic Architecture The Dynamic Tower design is made up of 80 pre-fabricated apartments which will spin independently of one another. "It's the first building that rotates, moves, and changes shape," said architect David Fisher, who is Italian, at a news conference in New York. "This building never looks the same, not once in a lifetime," he added. The 420-metre (1378-foot) building's apartments would spin a full 360 degrees, at voice command, around a central column by means of 79 giant power-generating wind turbines located between each floor. The slender building would be energy self-sufficient as the turbines would produce enough electricity to power the entire building and even feed extra power back into the grid, said the Italian architect at the unveiling of the project in New York. The apartments, which will take between one and three hours to make a complete rotation, will cost from $3.7m to $36m. There are also plans to build a similar, 70-storey skyscraper in Moscow. "I call these buildings designed by time, shaped by life," said the Florence-based architect, who has never built a sky-scraper before. "These buildings will open our vision all around, to a new life." The skyscraper will cost an estimated $700m to build and should be up and running in Dubai in 2010. Find more at
