I spend quite a bit of time visiting different antiques, collecting and appraisal websites, and I have tried to provide you with links for some of the best and easiest places to start your research. I am not an antiques dealer or appraiser myself, but I have learned a few things from working with them over the years... Don't just walk up and ask an antiques dealer, "What's this worth?" The standard reply is, "How much do you want for it?" Many of them have spent years acquiring knowledge, and passing out free advice is not typically part of their job description. Also, don't sell your item to the same person you ask to evaluate it. Buying low and selling high is how they make their living. Quality is very important. Just because something is old doesn't necessarily make it valuable. The better its condition, the more it's worth. No matter what information you find regarding the value of your antique or collectible, it is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay you for it! So what's an appraisal anyway? An appraisal is what determines the fair market value of your property. The appraisal is performed by a licensed appraiser who provides a professional opinion of the value of your property based on a variety of factors. Its an important part of the mortgage process that needs to happen before the transaction can be finalized. It's easier to understand the whole appraisal process by breaking it down into three main parts. There's the Real Estate Inspection. The Comparables. And The Final Report of Value. The real estate inspection will take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes based on the size of your home. The appraiser will record things like square footage, the dimensions of your property and the number of rooms in your home. He'll verify his findings with information provided by third parties such as the real estate multiple listing service and county records. The next step is for the appraiser to evaluate Comparables. Comparables are recent home sales in and around your neighborhood. ***yzing these recent past sales helps an appraiser determine the current market value of your home. How to be an accomplished appraiser His name is Geoff Dominy, and he is one of Canadas most respected gemologists. Aside from his work as an appraiser on the Canadian Antiques Road Show, he is a Fellow With Distinction of the Gemological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain, was founder and president of the Jewelers Association of Canada; and teaches the Jewelry Appraisal Program at Vancouver Community College. ILSTV sat down with Geoff to learn what it takes to become an accomplished appraiser. Geoff Dominy: One of the main questions that my students ask me when they do the Appraisal Course is, What are the attributes of a jewelry appraiser? And I tell them that the first thing you have to do is to get qualified as a gemologist. Because there are two parts to an appraisal: One is to qualify and quantify what you are actually appraising, and thats the role of a gemologist. The second part is to assign a value to it. And unfortunately a lot of gemologists emerge from these different gemological programs feeling that they are competent in both areas.
