  • Edward Elgar : The Apostles ( Prologue) Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) The Apostles Op. 49 (Die Apostel; Les Apôtres), oratorio for soloists, chorus and orchestra. First performance in 1903. "Prologue" (Chorus & Orchestra) The Blessed Virgin, The Angel Gabriel : Alison Hargan, soprano Mary Magdalene : Alfreda Hodgson, contralto St John : David Rendall, tenor St Peter : Bryn Terfel, bass Jesus : Stephen Roberts, bass Judas : Robert Lloyd, bass London Symphony Chorus London Symphony Orchestra Roderick Elms, organ Conducted by Richard Hickox The work is in two parts and seven sections, each played without a break. Words were selected by Elgar from the New Testament and Apocrypha. 1. (Part 1) "The Calling of the Apostles". The music begins just before dawn; the sun rises, and one by one the Apostles are chosen. 2. "By the Wayside". This depicts Jesus' teaching, and particularly evokes the Beatitudes. 3. "By the Sea of Galilee". Crossing the sea is incidental; Mary Magdalene is the focus here. After a stormy night scene, her conversion is portrayed, and the scene moves to Caesarea Philippi and Capernaum. The scene is followed by a choral epilogue, "Turn ye to the stronghold," added late in the composition of the piece. 4. (Part 2) "The Betrayal". Although it follows the Passion narrative, the section is chiefly concerned with the character and motivation of Judas. He is shown as trying to maneuver Jesus so that he is forced to show his divine power and establish his kingdom. The events of the trial and condemnation ...

  • First time 2 Apostles appear on ABC Nightline: Elder Ballard and Cook in1820.com In two high-profile segments, one on ABC's World News Tonight and the other on ABC's Nightline Friday, reporter Dan Harris spent nine minutes telling about the LDS Church, including reports on the new Draper Temple and interviews with Elder M. Russell Ballard and Elder Quentin L. Cook. In a 30-second piece on ABC World News Tonight Harris focused briefly on temples, baptism for the dead, families and Proposition 8. The eight minute and 30 second "Faith Matters" piece on Nightline begins with this "Ever since the first Mormon temple was built more than 150 years ago, they have been the subject of speculation and suspicion. The temples are imposing structures where private and sacred rituals are performed, and where outsiders are almost never welcomed." Harris asks Elder Ballard why the media was invited to Salt Lake City and an open house for the new Draper Temple: "We want to be understood, not misunderstood," Elder Ballard, "and people are defining us in the wrong way. They're defining us without having the facts." Harris' narrative overviewed recent high-profiles stories about the church including Mitt Romney's presidential bid, support of Proposition 8, and confusion with polygamists. Then, Harris talks about the temple, including the Celestial Room and baptistry. Harris then points out the church's conflict with Jews over posthumous baptism of Holocaust victims. When talking about the church history of persecution, Harris confronted Elders Ballard and Cook ...

  • The Apostles Breaking Barriers The Apostles were formed in the Islington area of London in 1979 by William 'Bill' Corbett, Julian Portinari, Dan McIntyre and Pete Byng-Hall. This line-up of the group did not play any concerts, and only appeared in a small number of fanzines (including Paroxysm Fear and New Crimes) before Bill Corbett left the group. Andy Martin (ex-Black Flag / Carnage) joined as vocalist in late 1981, and the group played their first concert on 22 September 1981. This line-up of the group recorded a demo tape - 'The Apostles' - in late 1981. The music of the group is generally characterized by a varied eclecticism which encompasses punk, Blues Rock, Industrial music (with influences like Lemon Kittens, Nocturnal Emissions and Five Or Six cited), and more abstracted avant garde experimentation. The remaining founder members of the group left the group in early 1982. Martin recruited Dave Fanning (ex-Innocent Bystander) as bassplayer, along with a revolving line-up of musicians (which included John Soares, Kev Apostle, Flump, Chris Low (ex-Political Asylum) and Olly Bucket (Eat ***) ) in order to continue the group who went on to play numerous concerts in the London area, and to record 8 demo cassettes and 4 7" singles between 1982 and 1984. Andy Martin and Dave Fanning were joined in 1984 by Malcolm "Scruff" Lewty (later of Hell***, Sidewinder, Nero Circus and Heavy Water) and drummer Chris Widni which created a line-up which remained relatively stable (with the addition of Sean ...

  • Judas Iscariot the Apostle - Montage A glimpse at Judas' critical hour. Please do comment, and feel free to express yourself. ------------------------- Oscar Wilde once described a cynic as one who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Herein lies the reason perhaps for Judas' eventual corruption and downfall. He failed to 'see' with his eyes, the greatness which lay before him. He was more concerned about what authorities thought and the movement countering the Romans, rather than Who it was who called him and loved him unto the end. At some point or another, we have all betrayed the Lord.. all have 'lost faith' and gone astray. We're probably still betraying him now. Jesus prayed for Peter, so that after his fall he would rise, and be the help his brother apostles would need in the hard times ahead. Jesus is counting on US as well to not despair, but to rise up in faith and holiness before the Father, so as to be witnesses to others of his precious and liberating love. ------------------------------------- "Judas? The Apostle who betrayed his Divine Master. The name Judas (Ioudas) is the Greek form of Judah (Hebrew "praised"), a proper name frequently found both in the Old and the New Testament. Even among the Twelve there were two that bore the name, and for this reason it is usually associated with the surname Iscariot [Hebrew "a man of Kerioth" or Carioth, which is a city of Judah (cf. Joshua 15:25)]. There can be no doubt that this is the right interpretation of the name, though the ...

So, also, does the description of the destruction of Jerusalem in Luke, as compared to that in Mark. The major themes of Luke-Acts are 1) the Gospel going first to the Jews and then to gentiles and 2) that of the prophet-martyr, with Jesus as the prophet-martyr par excellence.
