They are elongated metameric animals with one pair of legs per body segment. A key trait uniting this group is a pair of poison claws or forcipules formed from a modified first appendage. This also means that centipedes are an exclusively predatory taxon, which is uncommon. Centipedes normally have a drab coloration combining shades of brown and red. Cavernicolous and subterranean species may lack pigmentation and many tropical Scolopendromorphs have bright aposematic colors. Size can range from a few millimeters in the smaller Lithobiomorphs and Geophilomorphs to about 30 cm. in the largest Scolopendromorphs. Worldwide there are estimated to be 8000 species [1]. Currently there are about 3000 described species. Geographically, centipedes have a wide range, which reaches beyond the Arctic Circle [2]. Aposematic Coloration Aposematic coloration is the possession of warning signals that advertise dangerous and unpleasant attributes, which are used to deter predators. The conspicuous appearance has been shown to facilitate the learning and maintenance of an avoidance response by potential predators (Gittleman and Harvey 1980). Warning coloration can evolve fairly easily as long as predators are able to correctly identify toxic prey and avoid making errors (Servedio 2000). Hence, a conspicuous form greatly facilitates this learning process. A classic marine example is the brilliant coloration and spectacular form of the lionfish, Pterois volitans. The dorsal spines carry a dangerous toxin that primarily affects the cardiovascular system by lowering the blood pressure to about one to two-thirds depending on the dosage amounts (Saunders and Taylor 1959). Paul and Raphael Ritson-Williams Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce bio Natural products can mediate behavioral and ecological interactions among many different species in tropical reef habitats, and several examples of chemically mediated interactions will be presented. Phyllidiid nudibranchs have contrasting color patterns that are thought to be a defensive mechanism, even though their colors make these nudibranchs obvious to visual predators. Feeding assays were conducted on Guam to determine if color patterns and chemical defenses could deter fish separately or in combination. Extracts and four different color patterns significantly deterred fish feeding. Several species of Phyllidia were extracted and tested for chemical defense against predators. While some species consistently deterred predatory fishes in field assays, others did not. The phyllidiid nudibranchs provide a fascinating example of aposematic (warning) coloration. Algal species that have proliferated in reef habitats often contain natural products that deter generalist herbivores. On reefs in Guam and Belize, we determined the palatability of common macroalgae to reef fishes. In Belize, we also studied the feeding preferences of the sea urchin Diadema antillarum. Some macroalgae and cyanobacteria were not eaten by generalist herbivores and are chemically defended. Bombina bombina The Fire-bellied Toads is a group comprising eight species of small toads (typically 4-7cm in length) belonging to the genus Bombina. Common variants on the name 'Fire-bellied toad' include 'firebelly toad' and 'firebellied toad'. Their name derives from the brightly coloured red- or yellow-and-black patterns on their ventral region, which act as aposematic coloration, a warning to predators of the toads' reputedly foul taste. The other parts of the toads' skins have more neutral colours such as green or dark brown. When confronted with a possible predator, it is not uncommon for these toads to engage in an Unkenreflex, "Unken" being the plural form of the German term "Unke" for firebellied toad, wherein the toad arches its back, raising its front and back legs to display the bold warning coloration of its underside.
