  • Pure Red Cell Aplasia with CellCept and Myfortic Healthcare professionals have been notified by the manufacturers of CellCept (mycophenolate mofetil) and Myfortic (mycophenolic acid) that these drugs, in combination with other immunosuppressive agents, have been associated with cases of pure red cell aplasia. Both drugs are used to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients. CellCept is made by Roche and Myfortic is made by Novartis. The labeling for these drugs has been changed to reflect the new information. Pure red cell aplasia is a type of anemia characterized by selective reduction of red blood cell precursors. Patients may present with fatigue, lethargy and pallor. In some cases, reducing the dose or stopping the drug reversed the aplasia, but reducing immunosuppression in transplant patients could place the graft at risk. • Dysplastic/Hypoplastic Kidneys Renal hypoplasia, dysplasia, and aplasia refer to conditions in which the kidneys do not form correctly while a baby is in the womb. Combined, these conditions occur in 2-4% of the population. These conditions are the most common cause of kidney failure in children, although many children do not have any problems from these conditions and go undiagnosed. Renal aplasia occurs when the kidney does not form at all. Renal hypoplasia occurs when the kidney forms but it is too small. Renal dysplasia is a condition in which your kidney has abnormal tissue in it. One or both of your kidneys can be involved in all these conditions. There is no specific treatment for these conditions other than controlling salt and water balance and helping and monitoring your childs growth, if needed.
  • Baby Born Missing 30% of His Skin! This baby boy was born missing 30% of his skin due to "aplasia cutis congenita." It is an extremely rare genetic birth defect in when you are born missing patches of skin throughout your body. The only thing holding fluids, blood, and organs inside of this infant is a thin and translucent membrane. You can easily see through this membrane and in to his body. Fortunately, doctors were able to correct this early on and he looks like a normal baby now :D! This clip was downloaded legally off the internet, however it has not been uploaded on to YouTube (to my knowledge). I thought this was very interesting, so I thought I'd share!

  • Alert for action -- Save Gaza children PATIENT INFORMATION: Name: Islam Alassouli Age: 4-years old Location: Khan Younis Status: Permission for bone marrow transplant in Israel rejected on April 13, 2008 for the fourth time by Israeli District Coordinating Office (DCO) at Erez crossing point. Rivat Mheisin, responsible for the coordination and liaison office for the Palestinian Authority (PA) health ministry, located at Erez crossing, informed Islam's father that the ambulance for his son did have permission to cross into Israel. Israel has denied all four requests for treatment in Israel and/or abroad without specifying the reasons for rejection. CASE SUMMARY: Islam Alassouli is a four-year child living in Khan Younis camp, in southern Gaza. 12-days from birth Islam was diagnosed with pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). Islam's bone marrow is unable to produce red blood cells due to the disease. He also suffers from anemia, a condition generally caused by PRCA. Islam requires monthly blood transfusions to survive, since he suffers from severe anemia. Transfusion therapy can lead to an excess of iron in the body, stored in the heart, liver and other essential organs. If gone untreated, it will eventually cause severe organ damage. Transfusions can also transmit infections. Therefore, Islam has been using 'Desferal infusions' that reduce iron levels in his body. The 'Desferal infusions' are carried out for 16 hours per day on a daily basis. At four-years old, it is difficult for Islam to physically tolerate the ...

  • Erythropoietic Agents and Antibody-Mediated Anemias The manufacturers of the erythropoietic agents Procrit, Aranesp and Epogen have provided updated information about certain antibody-mediated reactions in patients treated with these drugs. Patients taking these drugs can produce antibodies to erythropoietin, resulting in loss of drug activity and pure red cell aplasia or severe anemia. This is most common in patients with chronic renal failure who receive these drugs subcutaneously. The labeling now says that any patient who suddenly stops responding to Procrit, Aranesp or Epogen and who develops severe anemia and a low reticulocyte count should be evaluated. If you suspect an antibody-mediated anemia, stop using the product and contact the manufacturer to perform antibody assays on the patient's blood. If it's found that the patient has developed antibody-mediated anemia, erythropoietic treatment should be permanently discontinued. These patients should not be switched to other erythropoietic proteins because their antibodies could cross-react with these products as well.
