Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Aleppo, Syria Entry Title: "Oldest Citadel" Entry: "We decided take advantage of the optional late start and decided to miss the 9am guided tour of Aleppo (second oldest inhabited city in the world after Damascus). We met up with Carl and Amy at 10am to explore the town ourselves. We had heard storeys of people getting easily lost going from the parked truck to the hotel, so there was a certain amount of anxiety as we set off with a German map. First stop was the much advertised Aleppo Museum (as Iraq is not particularly assessable anymore, it is a good spot for Syrian antiquities), where we saw exhibitions on Syrian history, early writing tablets, pottery, jewellery and also a display on a Neanderthal child (80cm tall) discovered in a cave at the top of the rift valley, 60km north east of Aleppo. It has been dated to around 20000 to 40000 BC, with a rather disproportional head size, and they were not sure if it was a boy or a girl. We also saw a lot of Mari god statues which we nicknamed 'boggles statues' from the Damascus museum. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures of the antiquities inside, so we've only got pictures of the boggles outside. From the museum we decided to stop and ask for help at the 'information centre'. Unfortunately the lady behind the desk was as ...

Who Owns the Past symposium - May 1, 2010 This program was an Oriental Institute/Archaeological Institute of America Collaboration. Our special exhibit, "Pioneers to the Past: American Archaeologists in the Middle East, 1919-1920," raised questions about the links between past civilizations and modern nations, the antiquities trade, and the role museums play in preserving the past. This forum brought together archaeologists and Chicago museum leaders to explore these issues in a conversation focusing on ways archaeology, history, and heritage connect to today's political and cultural realities. "Who Owns the Past?" opens with Geoff Emberling, Chief Curator of the Oriental Institute Museum, who will discuss the issues the Pioneers to the Past exhibit raises concerning previous attitudes towards antiquities and how they were obtained. A panel discussion follows, featuring: -James Cuno, President and Director of the Art Institute of Chicago. His book, Who Owns Antiquity?: Museums and the Battle over Our Ancient Heritage, inspired discussion with his message that concern for antiquities should be dictated not by politics but by the demands of conservation and broad public access - Gil Stein, Director of the Oriental Institute and Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, University of Chicago, is a committed proponent for building strong international legal frameworks to protect cultural heritage from looting and the illicit antiquities trade - Carlos Tortolero, President of Chicago's National Museum of Mexican ...
Hamat Gader - Hot Springs - Parrot Show - Aligator Park - Roman Antiquities One of the most beautiful and popular health retreats in the Roman Empire was in Hamat Gader on the southern ascent to the Golan Heights. Today you can see the remains of the incredible Roman Baths and an ancient amphitheatre. There are modern hot springs and mineral baths fed by underwater springs at temperatures over 40 degrees celcius. There are no separate bathing facilities, however in the winter until Shabbat HaGadol, there is "men only" night on Thursday nights until 2am. Even if you don't use the Hot Springs or fresh water pool, there is a lot to see and do. We watched the family-friendly parrot show, then took a stroll through the alligator park and petting zoo. There are lovely grounds for a picnic near the ancient Roman ruins. It's only 20 minutes from our Zimmers at Villa Rimona in Yavne'el. Watch our playlist of other sights in the area. Or call (USA) 718-717-2192 or (ISRAEL) 077-419-9001 for more info or to reserve a Zimmer.
Ancient Site in Nablus Re-excavated Ancient Site in Nablus Re-excavated In collaboration with the Palestinian Department of Antiquities, which was re-established 15 years ago, a team of international archaeologists have recommenced the excavation of the ancient site of Tell Belata, in the West Bank city of Nablus. "Establishing a department of archaeology was an important event. It can be viewed as a revival of the Palestinian Department of Antiquities (which) ceased to exist in 1948. At the same time it gives Palestinians the opportunity to participate in writing or rewriting the history of Palestine from its primary sources," said Hamdan Taha, director General of the Palestinian Department of Antiquities. The aim of the excavation is to understand the site better, as it features evidence of human structures since 5000 years. "Tell Balata is identified as a biblical place in fact, Shekhem or Sikkim, however it's pronounced, but that same name occurs also in external sources. And the most important source is the Amarna archive tablets, clay tablets, found in Egypt, and they date to the four***th century BC. And especially from those sources we know quite a bit about the king of this small kingdom, with the capital in Sikkim or Shakmu, as it's called there, who was trying to rebel against the Egyptian overlord," said Gerrit Van Der Jooit of Leiden University, the Netherlands. Over 3500 years ago, the city of Shekhem, which the Jews still refer to it as, was an important regional center due to its strategic ...
WHY DOES THE PAST MATTER ● Greco-Roman antiquity in the 21st century (1) Public forum organised by Trinity College Dublin School of Histories and Humanities Classics Department to explore the ways in which we use the classical past and to what extent and why it remains relevant today and important for our future. The forum was organised on the occasion of the launch of the Andrew A. David Lectureship in Greek Archaeology and History, a position funded by the generosity of the Andrew A. David Foundation and the AG Leventis Foundation. The event, which took place at the Trinity Long Room Hub on October 7th last, was chaired by Dr. Tom Mitchell and featured talks by AG Leventis Professor of Greek Culture in the University of Cambridge, Paul Cartledge, poet Peter Fallon, artist Dorothy Cross and Professor of Classical Archaeology and Director of the Archaeological Unit at the University of Cyprus, Demetrios Michaelides. The forum aimed to contribute to the current public debate taking place in Ireland about the importance of the arts and humanities. Questions raised included why archaeological remains such as the Parthenon marbles, are such a source of dispute. Why people are arguing about the 'ownership' of Alexander the Great. How Ulysses, one of the seminal novels of the 20th century, is an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey, a work created nearly thirty centuries ago. Why a modern Irish poet would translate Vergil's Georgics and why a contemporary British politician would write a book about the Roman Empire. The speakers concluded that Greek and ...

American Antiquities And Joe Smiths Crash and Burn in The West American Antiquities and Discoveries in The West was in publication from 1831 to 1838, at least. In it there are 35+pages on Champollion. It calls Mormonism "The recent imposture...." Mormonism makes many claims without a scintilla of evidence. Mormons use "The Perl of Great Price" AKA Book of Abraham as a divine text. It is an absurd joke. But since it pretends to be of God it's really blasphemy. The contents of American Antiquities should make the Mormons bosom warm, if they buy it and believe it then it must be true. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be", Says Jesus. But he text in American Antiquities is enticing. But mostly not true. Just like the Abraham papyrus and the Book of Mormon!

All digital media is instantly uploaded to the internet and permanently stored in the cloud, safely backed-up on servers scattered around the world. Only a handful of small businesses in the world have the expertise to recover data from pre-cloud devices. He shows Cat, the store's only employee, an old compact disc left to him from his deceased mother and asks her to recover its contents. Will Cat help him find a working CD reader? And what will they discover among the contents of the disc? The agreement was signed as part of a Greek campaign to have looted items returned to their country. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Sunday on illegal trafficking of cultural artifacts. The agreement was signed at Athens' new Acropolis Museum, facing the ancient hill and the Parthenon Temple. [Stavros Lambrinidis, Greek Foreign Minister]: "As you mentioned in your speech during a foreign ministry meeting; that we don't simply share policies, but also values, values born here, let me be so bold as to say, Hillary Clinton, welcome home to Greece." The agreement monitors ancient Greek and Byzantine antiquities entering the United States, in an effort to curb the looting and trafficking of artifacts. The Department of Homeland Security will publish, in the federal register, a list of the types of archaeological and ecclesiastical items that will require documentation to be brought into the United States. Restricted material will include objects from Paleolithic times through the late Byzantine period. Entry from: Cairo, Egypt Entry Title: "Cairo's Antiquities 101" Entry: "Like most week-long Egyptian tours, ours began with a whirlwind introduction to Cairo. In the morning, we had breakfast, packed our bags, and schlepped out to the main road to catch our bus for the day. The itinerary for the day consisted of half a day at the pyramids and half a day at the Egyptian Museum. Mona, our temporary guide, made the excellent decision to go to the pyramids first, before they got crowded. It took us a good half hour to get there through Cairo's crazy traffic, but eventually the city ebbed away and there they were. Mona explained that actual pyramids were only built in the Old Kingdom, when rulers wanted great monuments to themselves. Later pharaohs had figured out that pyramids essentially acted as big markers saying "Royal Treasure Buried Here!" and opted for less conspicuous burial sites. The Great Pyramid at Giza stands 136 m tall with each corner at 52 degrees. Mona also told us its inner chambers had such mystical properties as an acceleration due to gravity of 9.4 m/s/s and that a razor placed inside the inner most chamber would sharpen itself. I'm not so sure about those last two, but it's a pretty cool structure nonetheless. We were also told of the failure pyramids, ones with messed up angles or ...
