They were the first to create and trap the antimatter form of hydrogen, raising hopes they might one day be able to hold onto the stuff long enough to experiment on it. The Guardian reports it only took them a few months to reach that goal. "The same scientists ... were the first to trap antihydrogen last year when they created and held on to 38 atoms of the stuff for 172 milliseconds in a strong magnetic field. In their latest work ... they trapped 309 antihydrogen atoms for varying amounts of time up to 1000 seconds (just over 16 minutes)." Holding on to antihydrogen isn't easy. Antimatter annihilates when it comes into contact with matter, like the walls of any container you try to hold it in. But CERN spokesperson Jeffrey Hangst told Sky News their technique is finally reliable enough to start to understand matter's volatile twin. "We don't need it any longer. The 1000 seconds should be plenty -- that's almost an eternity on an atomic physics lifetime. Antimatter annihilation and Time as a physical process. One of the biggest and most enduring mysteries in science: What process causes matter to survive and antimatter to all but disappear? Why do we live in a matter-dominated universe? Understanding the asymmetry between matter and antimatter is one of the most important quests in modern cosmology because it would help expand or perhaps even challenge aspects of the Standard Model. In 1928, a young physicist, Paul Dirac, wrote equations that predicted the existence of antimatter. Dirac showed that every type of particle has a twin, exactly identical but of opposite charge. As Dirac saw it, the electron and the positron are mirror images of each other. With all the same properties, they would behave in exactly the same way whether in realms of matter or antimatter. It became clear, though, that ours is a matter universe. In a new theory the annihilation of antimatter forms part of a process of continuous change a kind of dance of creation that we see and feel as the passage of time itself.
