  • The End of Antibiotics? Antibiotics are the one single medical discovery to save more lives than any other. Today, sixty years after the start of their widespread use, we face a potential future without them. As more and more bacteria become resistant to current antibiotics, very few new antibiotics are approved for use, or even developed by pharmaceutical drug companies. What does the future hold? Will doctors be able to perform simple surgeries without the necessary infection preventions on hand? Can incentives be given to induce more research and development in this area? What should government be doing to avoid this catastrophic scenario?

  • The Tao of Antibiotic Resistance The problem of antibiotic resistance is something many of you may be familiar with. It is one that has been around ever since the historic discovery of penicillin- the miracle drug as it was called then - by Alexander Fleming in 1928. The drug was actually produced in 1942 and since then numerous classes of more and more powerful antibiotics have emerged.
  • Making Colloidal Silver - the best antibiotic for me I have been making and using colloidal silver for approximately 12 years. It is far superior to any other antibiotic that I have ever taken, and I've taken many over the years. I take it to make a 15 day cold, into a 4 day cold, and to terminate strep throat in 2 days. I gave it to my dogs and they recovered from Parvo. My friend used it on a non-healing wound and it healed quickly.

  • Colloidal Silver: A Super Antibiotic? (CC) Acting as a catalyst, Colloidal Silver reportedly disables the enzyme that one-celled bacteria, viruses and fungi need for their oxygen metabolism. They suffocate without corresponding harm occurring to human enzymes or parts of the human body chemistry. It was in common use until 1938. With the development of more effective, less expensive antibiotics such as penicillin and sulfanilamide, medical use of colloidal silver ceased. Turn CC on to see closed captioned after 2:45 minutes.

  • Acne Treatment with Topical Antibiotics Dr. Thomas P. Habif, MD discusses Acne Treatment with Topical Antibiotics. See more at www.dermnet.com PLEASE RATE AND COMMENT!!! Pathogenesis of inflammation P. acnes is found in low numbers on normal skin and is probably not infectious. The bacteria may be the primary factor in the production of inflammatory acne. The mixture of abnormally desquamated cells and excessive amounts of sebum in the microcomedo provides a lipid rich environment for bacteria to thrive. They produce neutrophil chemotactic factors and stimulate neutrophils to release lysosomal enzymes. These proinflammatory mediators attack the microcomedo follicular wall and contribute to the formation of inflammatory lesions. Acne improves when the P. acnes numbers are reduced. P. acnes is sensitive to many antibiotics. The problem is to deliver antibiotics into the lipid-rich environment of the sebaceous follicles where the organism is proliferating. Topical and oral antibiotics are used alone or in combination with topical retinoids. Retinoids disrupt the microcomedo. Benzoyl peroxide Benzoyl peroxide is an effective non-specific antimicrobial agent. It penetrates sebum and suppresses the growth of P. acnes more effectively than topical clindamycin and erythromycin. It has only a weak effect on inflammation and little comedolytic activity. It does not stimulate bacterial resistance like erythromycin and clindamycin. Product formulations include gels, creams, lotions, cleansers and bar soaps. It is available ...

  • Don't Use Antibacterial Soap, Or Overuse Antibiotics People are dying from MRSA bacteria as the result of the overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial agents in soap, detergents and toothpaste. Antibacterial soap has also been linked to cancer, upsets hormones including thyroid, and contaminates breast milk. Some 72% of all liquid soap sold in the United States now contains antibacterial ingredients, as do many toothpastes. People who use antibacterial soaps and cleansers develop bacterial-born illnesses just as often as people who use products that do not contain antibacterial ingredients. This video mentions that it is natural for certain bacteria to be on our skin. Unlike what we've been taught, bacteria is not our enemy. Children exposed to bacteria in early childhood actually have stronger immune systems. Bacteria only becomes uncontrollable when our immune systems are suppressed by a lack of nutrition, stress, too little sleep and of course prescription drugs, which purposely suppress immunity. Over 95% of the time that antibiotics are prescribed it is for viruses such as colds and flu, despite the fact that this is futile - but it is big business. Bacteria fights back against attacks from antibiotics and antibacterial agents found in household products, and the result is "super bugs." The best way to stay healthy is to eat healthy and take high quality nutritional supplements. Get enough sleep, sunshine, and eliminate stress as much as possible. Antibacterial soaps bring in $16 billion per year for their makers ...
  • Antibiotics - Dangerous or Safe? Stop Abusing Antibiotics! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2008 Filed under: dangerous or safe In the ninth instalment of her "Dangerous or Safe?" series, paediatrician Dr. Cara Natter son sets the record straight on antibiotics. Getty Images WHAT IS THE QUESTION? The discovery of antibiotics marked one of the major turning points in medical history: For the first time, medicines could fight infections head on. But ... *antibiotics only fight infections *antibiotics only treat one kind of infection: bacterial *each specific antibiotic only fights a few particular bacteria It quickly became a slippery slope to the abuse of antibiotics: *when given "just in case," antibiotics became grossly overused *almost immediately, bacteria evolved strategies to live through the antibiotics -- this then required higher doses and newer formulations *now there are bacteria resistant to almost all antibiotics that exist -- and we cannot come up with new antibiotics fast enough How big a problem is antibiotic resistance? *approximately 2 million people acquire infections while being hospitalized every year, an estimated 90000 of them die of these infections, and 70% of these bacteria are resistant to at least one drug (and some are resistant to all) *in the community (rather than within the hospital), there are two drug resistant bacteria that have become so ubiquitous, they are widely known by their acronyms: MRSA (methacillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus ...

More support to the importance of quarantining a new reptile... Larry, my Surinam Red Tail, ended up having mites and a stomach parasite. The mites spread to another boa this time and after finding out about the stomach parasite, the medicine was given to all boas as a precaution. • Session 4: Propolis..The Natural Antibiotic Propolis is a resinous mixture that honey bees collect from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. It is used as a sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive. Propolis is used for small gaps (approximately 6.35 millimeters (0.3 in) or less), while larger spaces are usually filled with beeswax. Its color varies depending on its botanical source, the most common being dark brown. Propolis is sticky at and above room temperature. At lower temperatures it becomes hard and very brittle.
  • Antibiotics provide solutions There is much discussion surrounding the use of antibiotics in food producing animals and the risk of resistance that may result. • Warning on Tendon Injuries with Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics October 2008- FDA has asked that a boxed warning be added to the prescribing information for fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The warning will remind healthcare professionals that patients taking these drugs may experience an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. Fluoroquinolones include Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Factive (gemifloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin), Noroxin (norfloxacin), Floxin (ofloxacin) and Proquin (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride). FDA is concerned that large numbers of tendon problems were continuing to be reported, despite a warning that already appears in the labeling for these drugs. The boxed warning is being added to draw the practitioner's attention to this information. This can also affect the benefit-risk decisions that are made when these drugs are prescribed. Certain patients are at greater risk for these injuries, including those over 60, those taking corticosteroids, and patients who have had heart, lung or kidney transplants. Certain tendons are also more likely to be affected. The Achilles is the most commonly affected, but other tendons can also be involved, including those in the rotator cuff, the biceps, the hand and the thumb. It is important to remember that the risk for injury is not necessarily gone when the drug is stopped. Cases have been reported in which tendon problems occurred up to several months after the drug was discontinued. Also, this increased risk of tendon problems applies only to patients who ...
