I got this pencil torch at harbor freight on south lamar in Austin, Texas. I got the butane at walgreens. Annealing colorizes the copper and softens it so it is easy to hammer and form. If you look closely at the video you can see faces and other shapes that look like something in the real world. At one time a hand mysteriously emerged. I like to think of this particular video as my way of painting again but without a brush. I like holding the torch at different distances to get the colors I like. It is a really satisfying way of making art. I may do it all over again tomorrow because I love these colors I get!! Sharon Blackwell

Heating time from 1.5 to 10 seconds is controlled by a microprocessor. You can use either one or two heat sources. Learning PID values using Simulated Annealing This is a robot that I built and used for one of my classes. (The assignment was actually to simulate a robot, but I wanted to build a real one.) It initially steers using an untuned PID controller that sort of works and uses a method called simulated annealing to learn better values for the PID controller. Annealing Brass Easy way to anneal brass for either conversion or to soften old brittle brass. It's easy to do but you can't let the brass get too hot. Of you do it'll be too soft and will cause structural failure, usually in the shoulder. If you heat the brass too far down the body of the sae you'll ruin the case all together.

Learning From Examples Using Quantum Annealing (Google Workshop on Quantum Biology) Google Workshop on Quantum Biology Learning from Examples Using Quantum Annealing Presented by Hartmut Neven October 22, 2010 ABSTRACT The ability to learn from examples is a quintessential feature of higher intelligence. Machine learning theory shows how to formulate this task in terms of optimization problems. In their native format learning problems tend to be formally NP-hard. Therefore, in order to arrive at an efficiently solvable learning problem, relaxations need to be made. But recent advances in quantum computing, in particular in adiabatic quantum optimization, have shown how quantum resources can be employed to obtain solutions to hard optimization problems that are of higher quality than available classically. Hence, it is an interesting question whether an advantage can be gained by applying adiabatic quantum optimization to problems arising in learning. In particular we studied non-convex formulations of learning problems arising from non-convex loss functions, Gestalt constraints or L0-norm regularization. We will present results from numerical studies as well as from applying an adiabatic quantum chip manufactured by D-Wave. About the speaker:

Annealing case hardened gun parts This GunTec presentation covers the process of annealing, or softening, casehardened parts so that they can be polished prior to the finishing process. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, starts this process by packing each part inside a metal canister, also referred to as a crucible. The parts are covered with charcoal to prevent scaling as they cool. Once the canister is full, it is placed inside the furnace which is heated to 1500 degrees F. The parts are held at that temperature for two hours and then allowed to cool.

Annealing, pickling, and sinking a large copper basin Check out my blog which is temporarily serving as my website: A photomontage and a couple of clips of me working on what will hopefully end up being a large basin for a baptismal font. This is a 3/32" thick sheet of copper, and it started out with a three foot diameter. It begins with me using a propane-fired weed burner to heat the copper in order to soften it after it work hardened from me hammering on it. This is the third time it's been annealed. The cool copper flames I believe come from copper oxides burning. After getting the whole piece of copper hot enough, I hosed it down quickly (not shown), which actually made the copper flex and move like it was alive from the changes in the crystalline structure. After annealing, a layer of black fire scale remains which must be pickled off with acid before further hammering. I used pool cleaner muriatic acid and a ScotcBrite pad. This is quickly rinsed off, sprayed with soapy water to neutralize it, and rinsed off again. Then it's time to hammer. I use a stump with a progressive hollow that I made with an adze (which I also made) and cleaned up with a sandpaper flapwheel on an angle grinder. The hammer I'm using was made by me and a buddy using an elm branch for the head and a scrap piece of hardwood (oak, perhaps) for the handle. It gets affectionately referred to as the "Barney Rubble hammer", but I feel more like Thorgrim from the less-than-good Shwarzenegger "Conan the Barbarian" move when I weild ...
