Be Safe from Anaphylaxis-Mayo Clinic Every year up to two thousand people in the United States and Canada die from anaphylaxis -- a serious allergic reaction. The most common causes are allergies to peanuts, insect bites and seafood. But not all anaphylactic reactions are severe. They can be mild with subtler symptoms. And most people don't know that if you've had a mild reaction in the past, you're at risk of having a life threatening one in the future. More from Mayo Clinic on a new anaphylaxis awareness campaign.
Embarrassing Bodies - Boy suffers from anaphylactic shock due to allergies The UK has the highest rate of allergy in Europe with a staggering 1 in 3 of us suffering. Three year old Charlie's allergy is a real worry for his mum, at seven months old, after eating scrambled egg on toast, Charlie suffered anaphylactic shock. Although Charlie has stopped eating eggs, he still has a little swelling and spots around his mouth when he eats any food. Dr Pixie sends Charlie to an immunologist to check his reaction to several known allergens. 90% of food allergies are caused by eight foods; egg, peanuts, tree-nuts, fish, shellfish, milk, wheat and soy. After being tested, it is clear that Charlie is only allergic to egg, which children can grow out of as they get older. This new series explores the conditions and ailments that leave many of us a little red-faced and aims to de-stigmatise common complaints.

Preventing Anaphylactic-type Reactions with Dexferrum American Regent has issued new precautionary measures for preventing anaphylactic-type reactions when administering Dexferrum (iron dextran injection). An updated boxed warning for Dexferrum now says that a test dose should be administered before giving the first therapeutic dose. A test dose of 0.5 mL should be given gradually, over at least five minutes. Although reactions are usually seen within a few minutes, patients should be observed for at least an hour after the test dose. The boxed warning also points out that some patients have experienced fatal reactions after receiving the test dose. Others have died after tolerating the test dose and then receiving a therapeutic dose. Because of this, patients should be observed for signs and symptoms of anaphylactic-type reactions every time Dexferrum is administered, and resuscitation equipment and trained personnel should be readily available. The company's letter says that patients with a history of drug allergy or multiple drug allergies, and patients receiving ACE inhibitors, may have a higher risk of anaphylactic-type reactions. It also reminds clinicians that Dexferrum should only be used for patients whose iron deficiency isn't amenable to oral iron therapy. What: The ***age Take on Anaphylaxis I'm a peanut anaphylactic, and I made this video for an awareness video contest at my school. It was a last minute effort, but I enjoyed doing it. These are all my friends, and I hope you all enjoy it. My high school had a poor policy for dealing with anaphylaxis until I had an anaphylactic reaction in the middle of English class, after touching my desk. I have a rare skin disorder that makes me very at risk of having a touch reaction. It had been in second reaction in the school, and they figured that enough was enough. Only two days later, a supply teacher had an anaphylactic reaction while teaching their class. My parents were outraged, and demanded that something be done. After meeting with the principal, they organized an assembly of Dec 4th, 2009. They organized a video and poster contest, and we got my allergist to agree to come and educate the students at my high school. I thought things were going well, until I saw that no entries had been made for the contest. Since my parents helped to organize it, I hadn't planned on entering the contest. 2 days before the video due date, I decided that I would enter. I want to be a documentary director, and I hope you all think that I could do it. This is amateur camera work, and it's a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, windows-media-player, could-have-been-better video. But I want everyone's feedback, please.

Anaphylaxis with Macugen Pfizer Pharmaceuticals has alerted healthcare professionals that severe allergic reactions have occurred in patients treated with Macugen. Macugen (pegaptanib sodium injection) is used to slow vision loss in people with the neovascular or "wet" form of age-related macular degeneration. In rare cases, anaphylaxis or anaphylactoid reactions, including angioedema, have been reported after patients received Macugen along with other medications used to prepare for the injection. A direct relationship hasn't been established between these reactions and Macugen or any of the other drugs. However, the company says that the patient's history should be evaluated for hypersensitivity reactions before giving the treatment.
