You can see the rocks and sand on the bottom of the estuary. There are seven species of North American Pacific salmon: chinook, chum, coho, cutthroat, pink, steelhead and sockeye. Although each species has a unique appearance and different habits, they share many characteristics. They are anadromous - meaning their eggs are laid and hatch in freshwater, and their young spend at least some of their early lives in freshwater before swimming to the sea to grow and mature. Their ability to find their way home again when it is time to reproduce is one of the most remarkable things about salmon. In fact, salmon have been known to travel thousands of kilometres in the ocean, as well as battle strong river currents and waterfalls to reach their hatching place. Pacific salmon, with the exception of cutthroat and steelhead, spawn only once and die within days of digging their nests or "redds" in the gravel and mating. Their bodies float down rivers and decompose, filling the water with nutrients for other species of animals and plants. Live and dead salmon are also important food for birds like eagles and gulls, and mammals such as bears and otters. In this way, salmon contribute to the health of freshwater ecosystems.   • Documenting Salmon in Alaska's Most Threatened Watershed Fisheries biologist Sarah O"Neal spent the summer of 2009 documenting the presence of juvenile salmon in the Bristol Bay watershed where developers want to build the proposed Pebble gold and copper mine. It's part of a study funded by The Nature Conservancy and Trout Unlimited. O'Neal and her supervisor, Carol Ann Woody, PhD, have documented salmon in 92 miles of streams and rivers near the Pebble deposit that were previously not known to contain these anadromous fish. What the research shows is that salmon are present virtually everywhere around where the massive open-pit mine would be built. Conservationists, including Trout Unlimited and its partners, hope the research will lead to the protection of these important freshwater spawning and rearing grounds for Bristol Bay salmon. Bristol Bay produces the world's largest sockeye salmon runs. If Pebble is built, the mine would likely expose the region to acid mine drainage and other industrial discharges that threaten to harm Bristol Bay's prolific salmon, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and other fish species. This video shows time-lapse photos taken over a period of approximately two weeks using a remote camera positioned at the mouth of Snyder Cove Creek near Olympia, WA in fall 2009. Snyder Cove Creek flows into Puget Sound at Eld Inlet. The photos document the replacement of an existing 36 inch diameter barrier culvert with a 14 foot wide box culvert. The project restored anadromous fish passage to nearly a mile of high quality upstream spawning and rearing habitat on The Evergreen State College campus. It is expected to benefit coho salmon, chum salmon, and cutthroat trout, and to restore natural ecosystem processes of wood, water, and sediment transport to the nearshore. Key partners on the project include Wild Fish Conservancy, The Evergreen State College, Salmon Recovery Funding Board, and the Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program.

Historically the Klamath and Sacramento River systems had the greatest spawning populations of these fish. Today the Klamath River and its tributaries are home to the largest remaining spawning populations.
