Albert Ammons - Shout For Joy (1938) Albert Ammons (Sept.23,1907 - Dec.2,1949) was an American pianist. He was the king of boogie-woogie, a bluesy jazz style that swept the United States from the late 1930s into the mid 1940s. Born Albert C. Ammons in Chicago, Illinois, his parents were pianists, and he had learned to play by the age of ten. He also played percussion in the drum and bugle corps as a ***ager, and was soon performing with bands on the Chicago club scene. After World War I, he became interested in the blues, and learned by listening to Chicago pianists Hersal Thomas and the brothers Jimmy Yancey and Alonzo Yancey. Ammons started his own band at the Club De Lisa in 1934, and remained at the club for the next two years. During that time he played with a five piece unit that included Guy Kelly, Dalbert Bright, Jimmy Hoskins, and Israel Crosby. Ammons also recorded as Albert Ammons's Rhythm Kings for Decca Records in 1936. The Rhythm Kings' version of "Swanee River Boogie" would sell a million copies. Despite this success, he moved from Chicago to New York, where he teamed up with another pianist, Pete Johnson. The two performed regularly at the Café Society, and were occasionally joined by Meade Lux Lewis, and performed with other noted jazz artists such as Benny Goodman and Harry James. Albert Ammons' Bass Gone Crazy should be considered a working version. Have been doing this better sometimes when there was no camera around - but hey, I am not getting paid for this anyway ! For those who are more into it: this version is modeled after the rather obscure sheets which were published in the 1940's in London. I had to add 10 more choruses to make it full length. It features a jumping chord bass line in contrast to the walking bass pattern of Eeco's version. Which makes it less smooth but more crazy, hence the title. Albert Ammons did play both (and other) versions over his many years of service.

Ammons was a player of boogie-woogie, a bluesy jazz style that swept the United States from the late 1930s into the mid 1940s.Born Albert C. 5 Poems by AR Ammons AR Ammons 1926-2001 I Never dreamed of being a poet. I think I always wanted to be an amateur poet.-AR Ammons (1) Archie Randolph Ammons grew up on a farm near Whiteville, North Carolina during the Depression. Born February 28, 1926, he was the youngest of three Children. He earned a biology degree at Wake Forest College in North Carolina, and attended graduate school at The University of California at Berkley. While serving in the Navy during WWII, Ammons started writing poetry. He worked briefly as an elementary school principal, and real estate agent before he had a position as a salesman at a New Jersey glass factory for nearly a decade. In 1964 he began teaching at Cornell University. In the Temple Of Zeus, a campus coffee shop, he met other poets for weekly discussions. He continued to frequent the coffee shop after his retirement in 1998. At his own expense, Ammons published his first book of poetry in 1955. He published more than twenty books of poetry, and was honored with the Wallace Stevens Award, and the Ruth Lilly Prize among others. He also received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
