Lapp Cables - an interactive algorithmic composition (2011) || /cv This interactive system composes music in real-time using data derived from Lapp Group cables. Using custom software, data from the cables were mapped to scales, chords, and rhythmic patterns to algorithmically generate the music. The same cables were then made into an instrument capable of performing the generated music. As the cable controls are manipulated, aspects of the music, such as the chords, tempo, key, instruments, and more, will change. The amount of volume of each instrument in the ensemble is mapped to one of the lights above each cable which reflect changes in volume. In real-time, users then control different aspects of the piece, synthesized in a jazz style at the client's request. The piece and system were commissioned by Lapp Group USA for the company's anniversary function. In addition to guests performing with the system, an artist improvised a painting while the system performed. by VJ Manzo /cv

Ojos Te Vean Ojos Te Vean Most of the communication channels in the Internet tend to be of clear pragmatic use. Chats, forums, and video conferencing programs are usually employed for transmitting raw content. In this way, all these media can be thought as a technological extrapolation of the telephone metaphor. The Internet channels are more sophisticated and offer a bigger bandwidth that allows the sending and receiving of image, video, group interaction, and more. However, the use that people gives to the new media has, in essence, not changed at all. We used the chat for keep in touch with friends and relatives. In the same way, we used Skype as a video telephone and it is coming to leave the video content unattended for long periods of time favoring the audio channel. Adalberto Vidal: Electronic study n.1 Electronic study n.1 by Adalberto Vidal. Composed in 2004. This piece has three sections of 3'15'' with 3145632 notes each. All pitches, dynamics, and spatial locations of sounds were algorithmically defined and arranged by a model which I published on the Csound Journal (Issue 2 - Winter 2006 - The sound material used throughout the piece consists in a simple string sound generated by Csound's "pluck" opcode which uses the Karplus & Strong algorithm. An envelope is applied to the pluck sound in order to soften its attack. All sound synthesis, sequencing, and mixing were done using Csound without any help from third party software or tools. Everything was composed using a standard laptop computer running Linux, Java and Csound. Please visit to listen to more of my music.

"Jizz in my pants" - YouTube's New Standard? Check out these videos: December 02, 2008 | Posted by: The YouTube Team | Permalink A YouTube for All of Us As a community, we have come to count on each other to be entertained, challenged, and moved by what we watch and share on YouTube. We've been thinking a lot lately about how to make the collective YouTube experience even better, particularly on our most visited pages. Our goal is to help ensure that you're viewing content that's relevant to you, and not inadvertently coming across content that isn't. Here are a few things we came up with: * Stricter standard for mature content - While videos featuring ***ographic images or *** acts are always removed from the site when they're flagged, we're tightening the standard for what is considered "***ually suggestive." Videos with ***ually suggestive (but not prohibited) content will be age-restricted, which means they'll be available only to viewers who are 18 or older. Air Lift, Lilt with Traffic (2008) Air Lift, Lilt with Traffic (2008) is an installation of eight inflatable sound sculptures. It uses eight airbags placed atop eight microtuned columnar pumps which are activated using subaudio frequencies. Simply put, each column is a different length. Each column is made of pvc and acts as an air pump. Fitted in the bottom of each is woofer over which subaudio and audio frequencies are played. The lowest frequencies, 0-30hz, have the effect of pumping up the airbags. Frequencies in the audible range, breathing, whistling and traffic sounds, have no effect on inflating the bags and are redundantly used to deflate them. A percussive sounds reminiscent of helicoptors, occur as the columns are oscillated (pumped) in the low frequency range. The bags rise and fall continuously as they inflate and deflate in a sonic environment of clicking, breathing, whistling and Portland traffic. The score for Air Lift, Lilt with Traffic is a through composed, algorithmically re-arranged composition comprised of subaudible and audible frequencies stored on a digital divice. The piece cycles every 75 minutes and is best appreciated over an extended period of time. Hours. Days. www.newsense-

Scriptor 1.0 Sample footage of algorithmic poem/painting digital projection Scriptor, version 1, by Brian Kim Stefans. These were captured from the computer screen by CamStudio. "The Scriptor series is meant to bring some of that free form doodling into the digital world. For the project, I created my own letterform creation program that, purposefully, lacks many of the elements of professional graphics programs such as Illustrator and Flash that encourage symmetry, cut-and-paste, and the mathematically precise placement of objects that we associate with digital design, not to mention much digital art. These letterforms and doodles are all by hand, and by eye -- they are a version of penmanship for the screen, but one in which each line or stroke of the letterform can be animated algorithmically (something you can't do with digital fonts). The words themselves are parsed from news articles interesting phrases are randomly picked out, given randomly generated sizes, placements and trajectories, as well as a crazy level (that's the name of the variable in the program) that determines their legibility. This crazy level can grow or shrink once the crazy level reaches a certain pitch, the letter explodes, but in some instances letters can be brought back from the brink of disaster to reach a stable state again."
Four Letter Words Four Letter Words consists of four units, each capable of displaying all 26 letters of the alphabet with an arrangement of fluorescent lights. The piece displays an algorithmically generated word sequence derived from a word association database developed by the University of South Florida between 1973 and 1998. The algorithms take into account word meaning, rhyme, letter sequencing, and association. The algorithm's tendency towards scatological or "dark" subject matter is influenced by a variety of language and perception studies, especially Elliot McGinnies' 1949 study "Emotionality and Perceptual Defense." While the piece was conceived with idea of displaying algorithmically generated lists, it was designed with flexibility and expandability in mind. The individual units can be connected ad-infinitum, and are theoretically capable of displaying any length of text. While Four Letter Words deals with a specific range of content, the technology can be easily expanded for future textual experiments.

All synthesisers, effects, and sequences are coded algorithmically within max msp. These include a reverb effect, bandpass feedback delay, comb filters, low pass resonant filters, FM synthesiser, subtractive synthesiser, percussion synthesiser utilising tendency masks and random number generators, and perhaps my favorite of all, the drum machine, which uses sine, square and noize oscillators, frequency and amplitude envelopes and preset banks to synthesise simple electronic drum sounds including kicks, snares and hihats. This is a project that I dug up from my second year of uni in 2007. I hope you enjoy it!
Action on Censorship The Plan is to Bump the phrase "Free Speech" up google's search statistics. As many people as possible please take a second to search for "Free Speech" in google, and support this cause. Transcript: Censorship It kills ideas Murders creativity and entraps minds Youtube has started to effectively censor videos under the guise of algorithmically demoting videos In a show of disgust many users took part in a boycott More should be done Google, the owners of youtube need to hear our voices Luckily we have a direct line too them Google monitor the searches they receive on their website I urge all of you to join me in searching the words Free Speech Together we can raise this search term up their statistics and make our voices heard Free speech is a necessity for maintaining the modern world and is the life blood of our culture. It is worth fighting for It is definitely worth a few seconds of your time Help protect our freedoms. Keep your speech free. This video may be re-uploaded anywhere and I would be grateful of acknowledgment for it.
"Algorithmically demote" this When "most popular" doesn't mean most popular.
How does Google handle "not found" pages that don't return a 404? How does Google deal with 'page not found' pages that are returning a 200 response code instead of a 404? Is this a form of spam? Can Google determine this mismatch algorithmically? Blind Five Year Old, SF, CA Have a question? Ask it in our Webmaster Help Forum: Want your question to be answered on a video like this? HITB SecConf 2009 Malaysia: How Low will Malware Go? 5/7 Clip 5/7 Speaker: Nishad Herath (CEO, Novologica) Imagine the next worm that establishes its C&C network by randomly choosing communication nodes from a set of algorithmically generated nodes. Now to achieve this, for example, it would be really simple for the bad guys to mass register a set of domain names that are algorithmically generated wouldnt it? Yes and we have seen this done before. So what might be our best defense here? Well, perhaps it is to go on the offensive staright off the bat. Turn the enemys strength into its weakness. How? Reverse-engineer the algorithm, identify the generated domains and have the registrar de-register them at the very least! Of course the worm can try to obscure the domain generation algorithm to make our lives harder. But in the CPU land, weve survived many battles. We have a significant collective knowledge base and a toolset both battle tested for decades. Sure were lacking in some corners perhaps, but in general, our readiness is strong. We can take on what bad guys throw at us. However, some very smart people have pointed out how future worms might take sensitive algorithms such as these from CPU land and hide in the GPU land, essentially creating a new battleground where were less prepared. Scary? Yes somewhat. But is this all there is to it? Unfortunately not In this talk, we will show you how the GPU is merely the tip of the ice-berg. We will show code which demonstrate the various processing options available to malware both ...
