  • Sorting Algorithms This video illustrates how several simple sorting algorithms operate, using people as the objects to be sorted. Produced by the Algorithmic Thinking class as part of Knight School 2009 at Menlo School. For people who know nothing about computer science but want to know what the heck is going on, here are brief descriptions of each sorting algorithm. Insertion Sort: Select each element in the list, and move it left until you hit somebody less than it. For example, when the element '2' is selected in the video, it moves left (shifting everybody right out of the way) until it encounters '1', when it is inserted back into the list. Selection Sort: Pass through the entire list, keeping track of the minimum element so far seen. When the pass is finished, select the global minimum and (in this simplified version of the algorithm) add it to a list of sorted elements. Repeat this, selecting the minimum element each time. Mergesort: Sorting a big list is too hard, so instead sort the first and last halves of the list, and then merge the sorted sublists. Of course, to sort each half-list we sort each quarter-list, and so forth. Eventually we get down to sorting a list with only two elements, which is easy! The merge can also be done very easily, by simply taking the smaller of the top elements of each sublist and repeating until the sublists are empty. Mike says 'I decided to try and create an idm-esque production with a very obvious sense of progression and development and also tried hard to manipulate synthesised sounds as much as possible while retaining musical integrity, rhythm and structure.' All synthesisers, effects, and sequences are coded algorithmically within max msp. These include a reverb effect, bandpass feedback delay, comb filters, low pass resonant filters, FM synthesiser, subtractive synthesiser, percussion synthesiser utilising tendency masks and random number generators, and perhaps my favorite of all, the drum machine, which uses sine, square and noize oscillators, frequency and amplitude envelopes and preset banks to synthesise simple electronic drum sounds including kicks, snares and hihats.   • Pure Data algorithmic composition in 53-EDO (with visualization) This is still a work in progress, so the presentation isn't as refined as it might be. Feedback would be helpful. In particular I'd like to know what I can add, remove or change to make it easier to understand. The visualization part is described in the video's annotations. The basic idea is to do a computational search for consonant 6 note scales, which can then be connected into scale networks. I wrote a number of Matlab/Octave scripts to do this. First, all possible scales are found, then most are eliminated based on step size constraints and calculated total dissonance. The idea is to find the "useful" scales that can be made in any arbitrary equal temperament. Here I'm using 568 scales out of a total of 433160. You'll notice that the step size isn't consistent. This isn't so great for melodic purposes, but I think it works fine here. Also, not all of the intervals are optimal. I'm trying to spread the total error between a number of less than perfect intervals rather than have a smaller number of very bad intervals (ie I'm using squared error). The dissonance is calculated from both the "complexity" of the ideal just interval (identified automatically, so no prior knowledge is needed), and the deviation from this in cents. This part is still sort of ad hoc, but it gives sensible results. Most of the sounds are made by my own algorithmic additive/formant synthesis engine. I might do a video later that describes that.
