NAVI -- Navigational Aids for the Visually Impaired hci.uni- NAVI (Navigational Aids for the Visually Impaired) is a student project aiming at improving indoor navigation for visually impaired by leveraging the Microsoft Kinect camera, a vibrotactile waistbelt and markers from the AR-Toolkit. While the "white cane" is a good tool to improve navigation for visually impaired, it has certain drawbacks such as a small radius or that it just detects objects that are on the ground (during typical use). We wanted to augment the visually impaired person's impression of a room or building by providing vibro-tactile feedback that reproduces the room's layout. For this, depth information from the Kinect is mapped by our software onto three pairs of Arduino LilyPad vibration motors located at the left, center and right of the waist. These pairs of vibration motors are hot glued into a fabric waist belt and connected to an Arduino 2009 board. To increase the impact of the vibration motor they were put into the cap of a plastic bottle. The Arduino in the waist belt is connected via usb to a laptop that was mounted onto a special backpack-construction, which has holes for cables and fan. To support point-to-point navigation usually a seeing-eye dog is used. This dog however must be trained for certain routes, costs a lot of money and gets tired soon. In certain research projects GPS is used to provide this point-to-point navigation, however GPS is not applicable for indoor scenarios. We wanted to utilize the rgb camera of the ...

Band Aid - Do They Know its Christmas 1984 Band Aid was a British and Irish charity supergroup, founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia by releasing the record "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market that year. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release. The record was released on November 29, 1984, and went straight to No. 1 in the UK singles chart, outselling all the other records in the chart put together. It became the fastest- selling single of all time in the UK, selling a million copies in the first week alone. "A Story of First Aid" by Nutnfancy Sometimes you may be faced with people who have been seriously injured and facing immediate death. And sometimes help is far away for these victims. You may look around for a rescuer, an ambulance, a phone, or someone else to run the rescue and find none. You will be faced with a choice: do nothing or overcome your disbelief and shock over the emergency, roll up your sleeves, and go save lives. And be mentally prepared: it may involve you dealing you a fair amount of carnage to render this assistance. This is just such a story. I was one of a few rescuers at a serious auto accident involving a decapitated woman and several more seriously injured family members. This incident helped me formulate my views on medical preparedness and opened my eyes how you just may be the only one helping. Being a sheepdog may be a lonely calling.

Pt 1: "Level 2" First Aid Kit Review by Nutnfancy Part 1 of 5 //////////////////// My experiences in the outdoors led me to my Level 2 First Aid Kit concept. More capable in depth and breadth than my also-reviewed "Level 1" First Aid Kit, my Level 2 kit will weigh more and be bulkier but can better handle medium medical emergencies. The kit shown focuses on capabilities in ROL (Rule of Law) situations where the priority is to stabilize the patient and effect transport to better facilities and care (when necessary). In group or vehicular outings, the increased size and weight of a typical Level 2 is more do-able. Similar to the Level 1, this kit still has an emphasis on stemming blood loss, disinfecting, pain stoppage, wound dressing, and bandage exchange. Size and weight are still players in this 5 lb kit and I don't achieve the capabilities of Level 3 or Paramedic-level lifesaving kit. As I say in the vid, that type of kit requires medical training and its use comes with extra liability and concerns as a first responder. However I have the Level 2 kit shown has handled my encountered medical situations adequately and absolutely blows away any other kits I've encountered along this POU. Components of the kit and the foundational "Nutnfancy" philosophies involved are explained. An annotated list of my typical Level 2 Kit may be forthcoming (another project!).
