- Bangladesh: Rights for Female Agricultural Workers - The Women at Karmojibi Nari Although almost two thirds of the laborers in Bangladesh work in agriculture, according to the Bangladeshi Labor Force Survey 2000, there is no minimum pay, no regulated access to health care, and no equal pay between men and women for them. Despite Bangladeshs largely agrarian economy and labor laws for industrial and governmental workers, agricultural workers have no legal support. Among them roughly half are women but they do 90% of the work says Rahela Rabbani, a project coordinator at the non-governmental organization Karmojibi Nari in Dhaka. As they are women their work doesnt count, she says. Often they are not paid in money but food. Karmojibi Nari, which means working women fights for a law for agricultural workers. Since 1991, Karmojibi Nari educates especially women who work in agriculture about womens rights, human rights, and the constitution because women are always less informed, says Karmojibi Nari General Secretary Shirin Akhter. After coming home from work, there is little time to obtain such information, she says. It is difficult to create an environment for them to learn in a male-dominated chauvinistic climate, she adds. Women dont feel supported. On one hand Karmojibi Nari lobbies at the political level to create a law, on the other hand its workers train women to organize themselves and to become leaders in their communities in four of the six administrative divisions of Bangladesh. They start on the grassroots level with small groups called cells ...

- The Trawden Agricultural Show ~ Puissance Okay, I'm not the best person to explain this competition to you guys, but I'll try my best xD Okay, basically you have a practise jump (which doesn't count if you have a refusal or fall) and then you have the main jump (which obviously does count) every round the main jump height rises (this one went from around 2ft5inch to 5ft7inch!) to try and knock competitors out. There were two sections for this competition, the horse section and the pony section (to make it fair obvz hehe). So, basically the strongest jumper wins, it's just that people get eliminated if they can't get over the jump or if they fall/crash and every round the jump raises in height to try and knock someone else out. This is just what happened in this comp, it may be a bit...hard to follow because I was swapping between photograph's and video lol but this is the footage I got. My personal favourite would have to be Bridge From the North (the paint/pinto/skewbald), absolutely Gorgeous horse 8D! Oscar won, and the rider got a TV :D Anyways, enjoy! - Agricultural Subsidies: Corporate Welfare for Farmers "The government is bailing out the banks...but who's going to bail out the government?" asks Texas cotton farmer Ken Gallaway, a vocal critic of agricultural subsidies that cost US taxpayers and consumers billions of dollars a year in direct payments and higher prices for farm goods. Agricultural subsidies were put in place in the 1930s during the Great Depression, when 25 percent of Americans lived on farms. At the time, Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace called them "a temporary solution to deal with an emergency." Those programs are still in place today, even though less than 1 percent of Americans currently live on farms that are larger, more efficient, and more productive than ever before. Consider these facts. Ninety percent of all subsidies go to just five crops: corn, rice, cotton, wheat, and soybeans. Two thirds of all farm products—including perishable fruits and vegetables—receive almost no subsidies. And just 10 percent of recipients receive 75 percent of all subsidies. A program intended to be a temporary solution has become one of our governments most glaring examples of corporate welfare. US taxpayers arent the only ones who pay the price. Cotton subsidies, for example, encourage overproduction which lowers the world price of cotton. Thats great for people who buy cotton, but its disastrous for already impoverished cotton farmers in places such as West Africa. US farm programs cost taxpayers billions each year, significantly raise the price of ...

- EuroNews - Interview - A Danish view on agricultural reform Food issues are very much in the headlines with European consumers forced to pay more for what they eat and soaring prices causing food riots in developing countries. This comes as the European Union carries out a major review of the Common Agricultural Policy which takes 45% of the EU's budget - mostly paid in subsidies to farmers. There is major disagreement among EU members on how the CAP should be reformed. Denmark, a major food exporter with a long agricultural tradition, wants to see member states follow its approach, including more environmentally sensitive farming, as the Danish Agriculture Minister Eva Kjer Hansen explained to EuroNews.
- A History of Hebrew Part 14: The Agricultural aspect of the Hebrew Language This is a segment of a much larger video production that I am working on and am looking for feedback (positive and negative) on the layout and content. ___________________ The Ancient Hebrews were nomadic agriculturalists who migrated from pasture to pasture, watering hole to watering hole. Their entire lives were spent in the wilderness and this lifestyle had a significant effect on their language. Some Hebrew words are obviously related to this agricultural lifestyle. For example, The Hebrew word ohel is a tent. Ro'eh is a shepherd and qatsir is a harvest Besides these obvious agricultural words, many other words, which we would not relate to agriculture, are in fact rooted in some aspect of the Nomadic culture. For instance, the Hebrew word hhen, usually translated as grace, is related to an Oasis, a place of beauty, rest and comfort. From the word hhen come the words mahhaneh meaning "camp," often pitched at an oasis and Hhaniyt meaning "spear," which is a tent pole that doubles as a spear. Some other words include Torah, often translated as law, but more literally means a journey. The word mitsvah, often translated as command, is the direction one is to take on the journey. Tsadiyq, often translated as righteous is the traveling on the path and Rasha, often translated as wicked means lost from the path. ___________________ Narration: Jeff A. Benner Graphics: Jeff A. - Iwate Swan 15: Agricultural School Festival It is high school festival season here in Japan, but it is also coming at the same time as many students and teachers are becoming sick with influenza and the flu. One of my schools had to cancel their school festival altogether, but the agricultural school decided to forge on amongst all the sick vibes sweeping the countryside and I was happy to see them pull through. The school is known for Miyazawa Kenji (宮沢賢治), Iwate born author who actually taught at this very agricultural high school. He is most well known for his famous stories for children, and there are little monuments dedicated to him all over the city. As a fan of Japanese literature, it was certainly very rewarding to know I was also teaching where such a respected and well known author had once taught many years ago. The festival was fun and featuring dancing, food, and booths for the students to show off their creativity and talents. I was glad to have gone and enjoyed the event! - MRHP, Tanzania, Brick-making using agricultural waste - Ashden Award winner This video can be downloaded here: MRHP won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2006. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog The Mwanza Rural Housing Programme (MRHP) has trained villagers in northern Tanzania to set up enterprises making high-quality bricks from local clay, fired with agricultural residues rather than wood. These enterprises have made sufficient bricks to construct over 100000 homes with greatly improved comfort and durability, in 70 villages. Mwanza, the second city of Tanzania, is on the southern shores of Lake Victoria. The area close to the lake is fertile, but further away the land and people are poorer and there is extensive deforestation. Here houses are usually made from mud, and need frequent repairs and rebuilding because of damage from rain and minor earth tremors. Using wood to make durable, fired bricks has exacerbated the deforestation. MRHP has developed processes for making high-quality bricks from local clay, which are fired using readily-available agricultural residues like rice husk and cotton waste, instead of wood. Houses made from the fired bricks are durable, comfortable and clean. Homeowners are freed from the hassle of frequent rebuilding, and many use their improved housing for businesses as well. The quality of the bricks is such that they are now being used in building programmes in the city as well as in the rural areas. MRHP has trained ...
