  • 5. William Butler Yeats (cont.) Modern Poetry (ENGL 310) with Langdon Hammer Yeats's middle period is explored, beginning with the middle-aged Yeats's assumption of the role of spokesman for Irish nationalism and the development of his complicated response to nationalist violence. The aestheticization of violence is considered in the poem "Easter, 1916" and briefly in "The Statues." Yeats's conception of the relationship of violence to history, with particular emphasis on the frightening interaction among the divine, the human, and the bestial, is demonstrated in the visionary poems "The Second Coming" and "The Magi," and finally in "Leda and the Swan." 00:00 - Chapter 1. • Two Excerpts from "Juggernaut"-A Documentary Work-in-Progress Context of Excerpts: Excerpt1 is preceded by an expository montage enumerating the chemicals that IBM had spilled from their Endicott production plant which would gradually form the 300-acre subterranean plume which Congressman Hinchey would refer to as a "sleeping Giant" in public testimony. The montage "aestheticizes" the plume along several symbolic tropes-(black masses from the paintings of Gottleib, Rorschach blots etc.) which later resurface as motifs that act as a double-symbols in linking the "sleeping giant" metaphor to my own nascent disease. This segment is directly followed by an interview with a Drug Rehab counselor enumerating the list of chemicals that were found in my system at the time of my rehabilitation followed by a tableaux of the "dramatis personae" involved in my intervention, a symbolic reenactment of my "hitting bottom" as an alchemical operation gone awry and a hallucinatory "war of images" between myself and the disease, leading up to Excerpt 1 which describes how the "sleeping giant" likewise began to awaken within the community. Excerpt 1 is followed by Dr. David Ozonoff of Boston University explaining the relationship of the chemical TCE to human carcinomas-the "alchemical process" motif is reintroduced using animated woodcut engravings (as well as the anatomical paintings of Vesalius etc.) to explain each step in Ozonoff's exposition. Excerpt 2 directly follows this, in which the symbolic "double-entendre" of both the community of Endicott ...
