  • Aerospace Killer Bees: USAF X-20 DynaSoar Reusable Spaceplane, Part 1 of 2 One of America's mistakes was not going through with the USAF Space program that as we know now, today with benefit of 20-20 hindsight, was sound using small, reusable aerospace re-entry gliders and a Manned Orbital Laboratory (MOL) space station but instead we poured $BILLIONS down the NASA rat hole of the dangerously flawed Space Shuttle. The Shuttle itself as an aerospace plane owes its existence to X-20 research and is sound, its just too big; the problem was and still is THE BOOST PHASE to get it into space from zero-to-hero; from zero speed on the launching pad to 10, 000+ mph using liquid-fueled rockets. The Space Shuttle is so heavy, its main liquid rocket fuel engines cannot even lift it from the pad! NASA then absurdly attached two SOLID rocket boosters to cheat and get it off the pad at extreme danger--since once lit they are uncontrollable which lead to the 1986 Challenger disaster that murdered 7 astronauts. Aerospace engineers knew from the drawing board that solid rocket boosters were unsound and unsafe, but didnt blow-the-whistle and the Space Shuttle racket continued to flow $ into NASA. They also knew that placing the aerospace plane ALONGSIDE the liquid oxygen fuel tank where ice fragments would break off during the boost phase was fundamentally unsound, yet the madness continued leading to the 2003 slaughter of another 7 astronauts when Columbia burned up during re-entry due to heat tile damage from an ice chunk. NASA = Need Another Seven Astronauts ...
  • Changing landscape of global Aerospace and Defence industry - Anand Mahindra [Aero India 2011] Vice-Chairman & Managing Director of the Mahindra & Mahindra Group of industries, Mr. Anand Mahindra, gave the keynote address as part of the lecture series organised during the Aero India air show in 2011, held in the Indian city of Bengaluru [Bangalore]. He spoke about the changing trends in the field of Aerospace & Defence manufacturing around the world & spoke about the 3Ps -- partnership, participation & procurement, that have come to symbolise current practices in the industry. He emphasised the need of India's private Aerospace Companies to move up the value-chain from being mere suppliers of components to primarily India's PSU Aerospace company to co-creator of systems & Technologies catering also to export clients worldwide. He also stressed the need to leverage the potentials & benefits of private-public partnership in India's Research programmes, also incorporating into it, India's educational institutes to evolve an Aerospace ecosystem in the country that would be comparable to the best in the world. However, with the introduction of the offset policy, whereby global defence companies need to invest 33% of their contracted amount back into Indian companies, he also cautioned the Indian Cos. from becoming complacent owing to the assured business coming their way & called for this potential game-changer to be utilised to transform itself to become part of the global supply chain & develop long term capability. Mahindra's forays into the Aerospace business was ...

  • Aerospace Killer Bees: USAF X-20 DynaSoar Reusable Spaceplane, Part 2 of 2 There is something to be said for using things that are SMALL. In contrast to the oversized NASA Space Shuttle that is so large (size of a MD-80/DC-9 airliner) because as a bureaucratic cash cow $ carries 7 astronauts and 50, 000 of payload that we have no booster to get it into space, a small 1-2 man DynaSoar aerospace plane could be placed ON TOP of existing rocket boosters so its not going to get damaged by ice chunks and debris during boost phase, and even if its on a Titan ICBM (sans warhead) and something goes wrong early, it can separate and glide to a safe landing—it has an escape capability. Escape from the pad at zero speed is possible if the DynaSoar has a small rocket engine to blast it away from the misbehaving booster. As you can see in this video, the Titan/DynaSoar would get into space on just 2 stages; theoretically the first stage could be fitted with parachutes and inflatable floats for re-use as only the second stage gets thrown away and burns up in a sub-orbital arc as the X-20 continues into space. KISS principle at work here. In the 1970 Hollywood movie, Marooned, an Apollo moon shot space capsule is damaged in earth orbit and the X-20 is sent up in a hurry to rescue the hapless NASA astronauts. The idea for the DynaSoar of course comes from the Germans; Dr. Sanger proposed a reusable aerospace glider that would get the first stage of its lift by a MOTHER AIRPLANE—not try to blast-off from zero-to-hero, von Braun-style with rockets. He was right all ...

  • Aero-TV: XCOR Aerospace -- An Innovative Route To Space (Part 2) Mark Our Words... The Private Spaceflight Revolution Will Be Won by Companies Like XCOR I have a number of heroes in the aviation and aerospace business... some of whom I've written about quite a bit and a few that I need to write much more about. Near the top of the list of XCOR Aerospace's Jeff Greason and the oh-so-talented team that supports this uncommon man with a dream AND the chutzpah to make it happen. Jeff Greason has 17 years experience managing innovative technical project teams at XCOR Aerospace, Rotary Rocket and Intel Corporation. As president and a co-founder of XCOR, he leads the engineering team that has developed ten different long-life, highly-reusable liquid-fueled rocket engines, a low-cost liquid propellant piston pump, and two manned reusable rocket aircraft the EZ-Rocket and a prototype for a private customer. As part of his duties at XCOR, Mr. Greason has had the final go/no-go decision responsibility on hundreds of rocket engine test firings, more than twenty manned rocket flights, and has served as a flight test engineer aboard one of those flights. Founded in 1999, XCOR Aerospace is a small, privately-held California C-Corporation. Their headquarters and development facilities are located at the Mojave Spaceport and Civilian Aerospace Test Center in Mojave, California. • John Carmack (Armadillo Aerospace) at NASA HQ John Carmack of Armadillo Aerospace accepts his $350000 Prize for winning Level 1 of the 2008 Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. The Prize purse was put up by NASA as part of their Centennial Challenges and the competition was administered by the X PRIZE Foundation. The Challenge is designed to accelerate commercial technological developments supporting the birth of a new generation of Lunar Landers capable of ferrying payloads or humans back and forth between lunar orbit and the lunar surface. Such a vehicle would have direct application to NASAs space exploration goals as well as the personal spaceflight industry, including the Google Lunar X PRIZE competitors. Additionally, the challenge will help industry develop the operational capacity to launch quick turnaround vertical take-off, vertical landing vehicles, which will be of significant use to many facets of the commercial launch procurement market. The Competition is divided into two levels. Level 1 requires a rocket to take off from a designated launch area, rocket up to 150 feet (50 meters) altitude, then hover for 90 seconds while landing precisely on a landing pad 50 meters away. The flight must then be repeated in reverse—and both flights, along with all of the necessary preparation for each, must take place within a two and a half hour period.
