For more information about online courses go to ecampus.oregonstate.edu 1. Fats are broken down to fatty acids and glycerol by enzymes known as lipases. One of these, hormone sensitive triacylglycerol lipase, is the only regulated enzyme of fat or fatty acid breakdown. It is located in fat-storing cells called adipocytes. 2. Triacylglycerol lipase action cleaves the first fatty acid off of a fat and this step is necessary before the other lipase can act to remove the other fatty acids from a fat. 3. Glycerol, is the only part of a fat that can be made into glucose (via gluconeogenesis). Fatty acids travel in the bloodstream carried by serum albumin. 4. Fatty acid oxidation occurs in the matrix of the mitochondrion. In the cell, fatty acids are attached to CoA and then at the mitochondrion, the CoA is replaced by carnitine. Inside the mitochondrial matrix, the carnitine is replace by CoA again. 5. Steps in fatty acid oxidation include dehydrogenation, hydration, oxidation, and thiolytic cleavage. The dehydrogenation and oxidation reactions yield reduced electron carriers (FADH2 and NADH). The double bond formed in the first dehydrogenation reaction is in the trans form. The hydration yields a hydroxyl group on the third carbon from CoA end in the "L" configuration. Thiolytic cleavage is catalyzed by the enzyme called thiolase.   • Make Sulfuric acid (metabisulfite/oxidizer method) We make concentrated sulfuric acid from sodium metabisulfite, hydrochloric acid and an oxidant such as hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid. Warning: The procedures in this video produce large quantities of toxic gases and deal with highly corrosive acids. All work must be performed in a fume hood with proper safety equipment. And all apparatus must be glass to withstand the acids. Sodium metabisulfite upon reaction with acid will generate sulfur dioxide. This provides a convenient source of sulfur dioxide that is easier to handle than burning sulfur, but it is acceptable if you want to go that route. You'll just need to build a sophisticated gas capture and scrubbing system so the sulfur vapors and soot don't clog your tubes, poison your air and possibly burn down your workspace. Sulfur dioxide is converted into sulfuric acid by reacting it with an oxidizer in water. In this case either hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid. Industrially, sulfur dioxide is reacted with oxygen over a catalyst to make sulfur trioxide. This is cheaper but extremely difficult to do safely for the home chemist so the metabisulfite/oxidizer method is used instead. You may use potassium metabisulfite instead of sodium metabisulfite. Both are used by home brewers to sterilize winemaking and beermaking mixtures. It's also used for homemade dyeing processes. Therefore it is very easy to obtain the metabisulfites without the need for expensive shipping fees or licenses. The oxidizers must be present for ...

They employ an unusual electron transferring process initiated by donation of electrons from NADH and accepted by oxygen. Desaturases are found in the endoplasmic reticulum. 2. Essential fatty acids are those that must be provided in the diet of an organism, because the organism cannot synthesize them.   • Make Nitric Acid - The Complete Guide We show 3 ways to make nitric acid based on two different chemical approaches both of which can be done using easily accessible materials. Warning: The procedures in this video produce large quantities of toxic gases and deal with highly corrosive acids. All work must be performed in a fume hood with proper safety equipment. And all apparatus must be glass to withstand the acids. Chemically, nitric acid is made by bubbling nitrogen dioxide into water. So the objective in this approach is to generate nitrogen dioxide. This can be done by reacting hydrochloric acid, a nitrate salt and copper. Around 80grams of sodium nitrate, over 30 grams of copper and 100mL of hydrochloric acid (37% 12M) are the quantities needed. The exact amount isn't critical. For usable concentrations, the amount of water being converted should be small, around 20-50mL. Any source of nitrate is usable including potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and even nitrate-based fertilizers. You can use our previous video on testing for nitrates if you want to determine if yours can be used. The tricky part now is leading the gas into water. Two approaches are shown in the video. In the first approach three containers, such as jars are place inside each other to force the gas to go into the water. This is very inefficient but is very simple to do.
