How to Prepare a Glass of Absinthe Even before absinthe was banned in Europe and the United States, the herbal liqueur had a long history with artists and writers. During the century-long absinthe-ban, the drink reached near-mythical proportions. Much of the buzz was due to its outlaw status but some of the drink's allure must be credited to the ritual surrounding its preparation. Now, once again legal in the US, absinthe is drawing curious crowds. Lance Winters, Distiller at Alameda, California-based St. George Spirits, spoke with Outside's Go about some of the links between artists and absinthe as well as the proper way to prepare a glass.

Step 2: Place an absinthe spoon -- a flat, metal, slotted spoon -- across the rim of the glass. Step 3: Put a sugar cube on the slots of the spoon. Step 4: Slowly drip three to six ounces of cold spring water over the sugar cube until the sugar is dissolved. The absinthe will turn from transparent green to a cloudy green or yellow. Isidore preparing Absinthe HD stereo : I love Absinth, and I love modular synthesizers, so I thought it would be a good idea to do something featuring those two wonders... And as it actually looked quite good and kinda hypnotic, I taped and uploaded it. This shows the absinth ritual using a see saw brouilleur and Verte de Fougerolles Absinth (I love that brand). The sound of the see saw brouiller is captured by a microphone and used to trigger stuff in the modular synth (Doepfer A100, with the one and only Isidore robot cabinet)... so that every drops (approximately) changes synth parameters such as pan, fm, filters and delay clock. I also added some melody from my micromoog and some rvb (on the moog only). I had to make several takes and edited the thing while I was totally drunk. Pouring Absinthe Suisse Style Paul Nathan shows us how to pour a traditional Suisse style absinthe. Suisse is how the Swiss spell Swiss, so an Absinthe Suisse or a Suisse Absinthe is a Swiss Absinthe or an absinthe from Switzerland or a Swiss style absinthe. Swiss absinthes are characterized by the lack of coloration in the product. When absinthe is distilled it comes out clear. Producers add color either by using dyes or food colorings or by dunking a really big tea bag full of herbs into the finished product. This final step adds color and changes the flavor of the beverage. Swiss style absinthes skip this coloring step. Occasionally you will hear of a Suisse La Blue or a Swiss La Blue. La Blue means bootleg. It was quite common for absinthe to be distilled in Switzerland during the ban. These absinthes were illegal, moonshine, bootleg, La Blue. Several modern brands have co-opted the name La Blue for their own advertising. La Blue does not refer to the color of the Spirit or the Color of the Louche.

Absinthe, otherwise known as the "Green Fairy" rose in popularity throughout the 1800's. By 1915 "The Green Fairy" had met her untimely end in France, Switzerland, the United States and nearly every part of the world. With few exceptions, her presence became a note of nearly forgotten history. This historical recap of the mythical Absinthe Fairy captures the story behind the rise and fall of absinthe's popularity throughout the previous century. As one of the most beloved beverages in 19th century Europe, and one of the only two alcoholic beverages to have its own deity, artists, poets and writers alike have been drawn to its allure. The Traditional Prepation of Absinthe This video demonstrates the traditional method of preparing Absinthe. 1.2 ounces of Absinthe to 3 to 5 parts ice water depending on one's taste and/or container size. Sugar is optional. A sugar holder (Absinthe Spoon) is use to hold the sugar while it dissolves under a slow drip of ice water. Water then drips on the sugar which drips into the Absinthe below.
