  • What Is Ableism? Ableism (from able and ism) is a neologism of American coinage, since about 1981. It is used to describe discrimination against people with disabilities in favor of people who are not disabled. An ableist society is said to be one that treats non-disabled individuals as the standard of 'normal living', which results in public and private places and services, education, and social work that are built to serve 'standard' people, thereby inherently excluding those with various disabilities. • Supporters demand status for ABDEL-KADER BELAOUNI Source: DAMN 2025 press advisory Join a group of disabled people and supporters on March 26th to demand status for Abdel-Kader Belaouni and demand the Canadian government end its ableist and racist immigration practices and policies. Kader is a blind refugee claimant who has been forced to live in sanctuary for over two years in Montreal. He faces deportation to unstable Algeria where his safety will be jeopardized and where there are no services for blind people. He is facing deportation because of Canada's discriminatory immigration policy towards the disabled, not to mention people of colour and the poor. "If you are disabled, it is very likely that you will never become a Canadian citizen because we are considered to be drains on the system. This is offensive, discriminatory and it has to stop," says Loree Erickson, DAMN member and disabled immigrant who will likely not be able to stay in Canada permanently because of ableist policies. Though we are an important part of every community, Canada actively works to keep disabled people out. The only way this will ever change is if disabled people and our supporters join together to fight for justice for everyone.

  • Beyond Inclusion: Rethinking Normalcy, Identity, and Disability in Theological Terms Tom Reynolds, associate professor of theology at Emmanuel College of Victoria University, suggests a reframing of what we consider normal and outlines how that reframing might alter how we think about the act of inclusion at the Disabilities, Religion, and Spirituality Special Lecture on March 1, 2010. Recent literature on theology and disability has underscored the need for a thorough revision of the way that faith communities understand disability. For this to take place, it is necessary to critique the way that features of normalcy come to measure what counts for care and inclusion, which have been uncritically adopted as a means by which faith communities think about their identity. Just as the male gender and hetero***uality have been constructed as normative, ableist discourses construct non-disability as normative and disability as other in order to mobilize representations that uphold identities based in exclusion. Often missed, then, is how practices of inclusion can feign openness but instead be deceptive forms of exclusion. From such a perspective, new possibilities arise for conceiving disability as part of being human and vulnerable, neither something to be overcome nor pitied, nor included as somehow other, but rather received as theological teacher. The Disabilities, Religion, and Spirituality Special Lecture is sponsored by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, and co-sponsored by the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender and ***uality at Vanderbilt Divinity ...

  • theAmazingAtheist SUCKS! (Boston Marathon Patriots' Day 09) AN OPEN LETTER TO theAmazingAtheist: Hello tAA, I posted several comments rebutting each of the claims you assert in your video, "Handicap Spaces Suck," but I have yet to receive a response from you. A few people have posted comments and video reponses defending accessible parking for people with disabilities, but many more have posted comments which are hate-filled and even more ignorant than your video. I am NOT writing to ask you to take it down, but rather to ask you correct the untrue statements that you made in your video; the easiest way to do this would be to annotate your video, and then post a quick video response to it, announcing the corrections. For your information, I will list for you several reasons why accessible parking does not suck, which you are welcome to use to make your video, "Handicap Spaces Sucks", suck much less: a) accessible parking IS A SAFETY ISSUE (a person who uses a wheelchair is often below the line-of-sight of other drivers, and may not be able to quickly move out of the way of a moving car); a person who has low-vision or blindness will have difficulty navigating parking lots; b) accessible parking spaces allow necessary space for a wheelchair user or a user of OTHER types of mobility equipment, such as walkers, scooters, braces, etc., to exit or enter their vehicle without damaging other cars; c) parking spaces are located near entrances to provide DIRECT ACCESS TO CURB CUTS AND RAMPS, which are not easy to see when cars are in the ...
