  • With Fire and Sword-Zaporizhian Sich-Запорізька Січ Zaporizhian Sich - original Ukrainian name "Zaporizhska Sich'" was the center of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, who were a power in the steppes north of the Black Sea from the 16th century to the 18th century. It was located on an island in the middle of the Dnieper River in what is now the Zaporizhia region of Ukraine. The term has also been metonymically used as an informal reference to the whole military-administrative organisation of the Zaporizhian Cossack Host. Initially the Zaporizhian Sich was a fortified military camp, the foundation for which was laid out on the Isle of Khortytsia in 1556 by Dmytro Vyshnevetsky. But only in 1618 did Hetman Petro Konashevych Sahaidachny order his Cossacks to build the earthen perimeter with the log walls on top of it. The log fort was surrounded with а massive abatis made from entire trees. Hence the term "Sich" — a noun derived from the verb in Ukrainian: сікти (sikty) "to chop" or "cut", meaning to clear a forest for an encampment, or to build a fortification with the trees that have been chopped down. The remoteness of the location and rapids on the Dnieper River provided effective protection from attack. Cossacks developed a large fleet of light fast light vessels. Their campaigns were targeted at were rich settlements on the Black Sea shores of the Ottoman Empire and several times took them as far as Constantinople.
  • Video Of The Week Featuring hoffmann1471 (now crazyurmel2) ~ World's Worst Drivers The Hampster Dance or Hampsterdance is one of the earliest examples of an Internet meme. Created by Canadian art student Deidre LaCarte for a Geocities page, the dance featuring rows of animated hamsters and other rodents dancing in various ways to a sped-up sample from the song "Whistle Stop" by Roger Miller. Canadian art student Deidre LaCarte, who was competing with her best friend and sister to see who could generate the most traffic, designed The Hampster Dance in August 1998 as an homage to her pet hamster, named "Hampton Hamster." Using four simple animated GIFs of hamsters and other rodents, repeated dozens of times each, and a loop of background music embedded in the HTML, at the time a fairly new browser feature, she named the site Hampton's Hamster House and had Hampton declare his intent to become a "web star." Initially, the website consisted of a single page website with four hamsters and other rodents, later redesigned and dubbed Hampton, Dixie, Hado, and Fuzzy. Over the next few years, alternate versions of the Hamsterdance appeared, such as for birthdays, where the hamsters are slightly modified to hold presents. The clip, a 9-second looped WAV file (dedodedo.wav), was taken from a sped-up recording of Roger Miller's "Whistle Stop", a song which was written for the 1973 Walt Disney cartoon Robin Hood. Until January 1999, only 800 visits were recorded (about 4 per day), but without warning, that jumped to 15000 per day. The Web site spread ...

  • A scene from the movie "The Light Before Dawn" On the day of his young grandson Leonidas' birthday, an aged Vasilis remembers the days of 1944 when he was a young rebel fighting against the Germans. He and another soldier have lost their company and are wandering in the countryside when they fall upon a German ambush. The Germans are hunting down two Italian soldiers a few months after Italys truce with the Allies. One of the two Italians gets killed during the scramble while the second one follows the two Greeks who manage to escape. For common soldiers, the treaty is a difficult reality to embrace. They cannot see each other as allies a few mere months after fighting as enemies. • Dutch Water Defence 1 / 2 The Dutch Water Line (Dutch: Hollandsche Waterlinie) was a series of water based defences conceived by Maurice of Nassau in the early 17th century, and realised by his half brother Frederick Henry. Combined with natural bodies of water, it could be used to transform the economic heartland of the Dutch Republic almost into an island. RoccProduction.. Early in the Eighty Years' War of Independence against Spain the Dutch had realized that flooding low lying areas formed an excellent defence against enemy troops, as was demonstrated, for example, during the siege of Leiden, 1574. In the latter half of the war when the economic heartland of the Dutch Republic (ie the province of Holland) had been freed of Spanish troops. Maurice of Orange Nassau planned to protect it with a line of flooded land protected by fortresses that ran from the Zuiderzee (present IJsselmeer) down to the river Waal. In 1629 prince Frederick Henry started the execution of the plan. Sluices were constructed in dikes and forts and fortified towns were created at strategic points along the line with guns covering especially the dikes that traversed the water line. The water level in the flooded areas was carefully maintained to a level deep enough to make an advance on foot precarious and shallow enough to rule out effective use of boats (other than the flat bottomed gun barges used by the Dutch defenders). Under the water level additional obstacles like ditches, trous de loup and later barbed wire and ...

  • 2008 Conflicts in Seoul, the Truth and Lies Declaration: the author of this video admit the picture of the man with the stone was taken after the conflict when he was complaining the Chinese students to the Korean media. The author apologize for the confusion caused by this mistake. Until now, no evidence has been given yet on who actually used that stone to attack whom. The picture of the man with the pinchers is still believed to be taken when he was protesting and the pinchers belong to him. The man was believed to be showing how people from N Korea escaped by using the pinchers to cut the abatis. Besides, it was totally illogical to accuse that the Chinese students would take something like the pinchers to welcome the Olympic torch. Before hard evidence pop up, the author refuse to believe the Chinese students had brought something like pinchers in advance plotting to hurt people. The second and third story were no problem so far. The author made this video in a very short term as a response to the Korean media who had accused the Chinese students for all the conflicts broke out in Seoul. And later death threats over the Chinese students were spreading on the Korean Internet. The author was just trying to help people to listen to the other side of the story and realize the Chinese students were really NOT against the Korean people. The Chinese embassy subsidized some of the students on the traffic fee. It just want to help the students who want to watch and cheer for the Olympic torch relay because the 2008 ...
